    Art or child abuse?

Story and bit of a background to it

Personally I think they are ******, and this daughter Olympia, could what she said be any more staged and coached by her nutcase father?

If we are going to go about labelling things art, does that mean I can go around making offensive paintings and just call it as art and say it is just one big over reaction?

Definitely not right. Sad to hear the kid parroting what the parents tell her in that regard - wonder whether she'll be as ok with it in 25 years time.

No real harm seems to have come to her directly in this case, but I think this is one issue where there really doesn't need to be any shade of grey - it can be pretty black and white - you simply can't publish nude photos of someone under 18. End of story.

Given the question in the thread title, Id say neither.

Its just inappropriate. What is wrong with this is that they consciously used a photo of a naked child to make a point.

This isnt just a good photo that happened to be naked, its a deliberate showing of a naked child.

That said, I dont think its the end of the world. I dont like the fact a child is being used for others to make their point but I dont think its abusive. ****ish but not abusive.

Yeah I was thinking something along the same lines. That's really the most important issue, I'm sure it's something I wouldn't be comfortable about if it was me.

Wouldnt say the girl is being abused as such, but I cant call it art. "Attention seekers" springs to mind.

Should certainly flag with the magazine that any government funding will cease should there be anything approaching a repeat.

Using a little girl in such a way to make a point? Sounds like abuse to me, whether she was fine with or not is totally irrelevant.

You know, there's a lot art out there that includes images of naked small children that isn't classified as pornography. This is only a big deal because it's on the front cover of the magazine and it's been picked out. Hell, there are commercials for nappies that would violate a range of laws if this photo was illegal.

As far as the issue goes, I find the argument Nelson uses somewhat troubling. It essentially boils down to "this image, whether innately sexual or not, could be sexualised by paedophiles, therefore it should be considered sexual". It's pretty backwards really, and a pretty big range of artistic material could be censored on similar grounds. This film, whether promoting sexual violence or not, could be considered to promote sexual violence by people inclined to such behaviour, therefore we should ban it. Hmm.

There is of course a reasonable question to be asked about consent re: participation in this sort of art and young people, but that's an issue that involves all art including children, not just images where the child is naked. I don't see this as any more fundamentally harmful to the child than forcing them to be in a family band or a beauty pageant or whatever. Some people are ****ed up and put their children through those kinds of experiences, it's never qualified as abuse.
