Computer Restarts Itself

The past couple of days, my computer has started this annoying habit of randomly restarting itself. First time it happened was Friday morning, it restarted itself 3 times in about an hour, before running fine for the rest of the day. Same thing happened this morning, and has just happened again twice in the past hour. Along with this, It will occasionally just freeze up rather than restarting, and my internet browser (Firefox) will sometimes randomly close as well. Now, all of this sounds like a Virus, but I've run the virus scanner a couple of times and it hasn't found anything, so I'm out of ideas. Anyone got any ideas/ had any similar experiences?

Usually if your PC randomly reboots it's overheating. Try opening it up and cleaning out any dust or whatever.

Aye, clean out its insides, check where the unit is positioned (eg has it been shifted over in the last few days so its now against a wall/table rather than having air flowing down the sides etc). Mine has a cooling vent on the right, found it did that when i'd been fiddling with the USB ports at the back and left the unit against the desk leg, blocking off that vent

Same **** been happening to me as well except I get a blue scren before the restart. Googled it and it's called "The blue screen of death" but all the links I go to I can't understand any of the advice on there. Oh well, just going to take it back to the shop and ask them what's doing.

My laptop had been doing the same thing (ie shutting off randomly). It happened because of an excess build up of dust within the fan and the heat sink causing the fan to become blocked and hence overheating my laptop. Once your computer exceeds a certain design temperature inside, it automatically causes the computer to switch off.

Take it apart, and clear out all the dust. If you can't do it yourself or your computer is still under warranty take it to your manufacturer and they should do it for you for free. Otherwise, if your computer's warranty has expired take it to any computer repair store and they should do it for a small fee.

I took it as a hint from my computer to go press the reset button on my life. To think it only wanted a proper fan.

Have you been able to clean it out yet?

I'm lucky I don't need to go to a computer store to fix my PC as generally they are more dodgier then a used car salesman.

I don't think it's the heat, its in a well ventilated space, and i downloaded a program that monitors the computers temperature and it's not getting too hot at all. After googling the problem on the net, I ticked a box in the settings that stops the computer from rebooting when an error occurs, so instead of restarting, it now takes me to the blue screen like duffer mentioned. From what i can gather there, it seems to be a memory problem. We're going to buy more RAM soon, hopefully that keeps it going till we can afford a new one.
