Have only heard great things about Hollow Knight so want to give it a go. Guacamalee looks good as well. Unfortunately won't have the pc for a while so will have to wait.

Haha, you will eventually come back to the original like a moth to a flame once you’re done with the other soulsborme games and you’ll have a much better time of it and geniunely enjoy it after the experience of playing through another of the games imo.

3 is objectively better but I don’t know if I liked it as much as 1. With 1 I felt like I couldn’t trust the developers not to drop a game-breakingly evil mechanic at any time, which made the experience very intense. You maybe lose that a bit with the polish of 3. Or maybe it’s just that I’d already played 1 by then.

Sounds very similar to the views of the friend who bought me the game tbh haha.

My horrible experiences withDS1 have definitely prepared me well for this though tbf. I now won't walk around a corner or touch anything without bracing for an attack or some other chicanery.

The polish makes this game great though imo. Adds to the lore and the environment and the feeling of immersion massively. The tighter and more responsive controls also make the game feel much more fair, rather than a massive beginner's trap.

Aforementioned friend has also suggested this will happen, and maintains that DS1 is the best in series.

No way is 3 objectively better. The interconnectivity of DS1's levels is still completely remarkable and unique to this day. No other game has matched it. 3 also spends a little too much time playing homage to 1 instead of actually doing something new.

All the games in the series have those magical moments where you're wandering around nervously and turn a corner, open a familiar looking door and then it hits you that holy **** you've somehow opened a shortcut to a place you were at 4 hours ago in the game. None of them do it as well as ds1 though.

The games are aimed at achieving fundamentally different things.

The goal of DS1 is dropping you in a chaotic, malicious world and making you conveet your existential dread into unbridled confidence as you conquer every aspect of said world through trial and error. The great combat mechanics and occasionally great boss are just vehicles to achieve this goal. For instance, you never know if a fog gate in DS1 is a bonfire, a boss or a troll and you need to earn the right to warp between bonfires.

In DS3, in contrast, the world design is inherently comprehensible and is designed to be accessible to the player. The goal of the game is to showcase and push further the excellent combat mechanics of the series and the finely tuned formula for great bosses. In short, the PvM combat aspect. While DS1 felt organic but jammy with plenty of filler bosses, DS3 has literally a gauntlet of absolutely stunning bosses with nearly no filler once you reach the one-third portion of the game. There are several areas which are designed specifically to house the boss with little else but DS3 has the highest number of awesome bosses in the series and also the best average boss quality. Bloodborne maybe has the absolute top 2 best bosses but doesn’t have the ten or so truly memorable boss fights that DS3 has. DS3 also has a mad amount of diversity in weapons, special attacks etc. alll of which are well designed and a joy to use.

I think DS1 is the better game as a piece of art with better lore, immersion, atmosphere etc. but DS3 has the highest amount of replay value of all the games and is also the most accessible and reliable. I have really fond memories of playing DS1 the first time but I only beat it completely once but beat DS3 about 15 times and play it when I want to do something meditative to just destress which I could never do with DS1.

The amount of ways you can approach DS1' first half hasnt been matched by any of the other games. There's for the most part an order you usually stick to when going through DS2,3 and Bloodborne. DS1 sprawls out from the very beginning and you can do skip over huge swaths of the game once you know how the map works. That's the reason it retains its replayability over any of the other games for me. The only things you can sort of do different in DS3 is do the bosses in a different order but it's not really the same as DS1 where basically half of the bosses in the game can possibly be the first boss you fight (apart from the tutorial boss obviously) depending on what you do.

Yeah this is true, there’s also a ton more of filler/junk which should have been edited out though and the 7 min runs to artorias and the 20 times you pass through blight town etc. which add meaning the first time just end up being a pain from the next.

Overall, I think Bloodborne is clearly better than both.

It's going to be an interesting ride. I remember having the time of my life in Sekiro and then hitting a boss like a brick wall and thinking "Man, this game ****ing sucks" then I'll die a hundred times, fast forward a day or two, beat the boss and think "Wow what a wonderful game!." It's one of my favourite games now but I am pretty sure my opinion would have been different had I not finished the game.

**** yeah. As discussed a couple of pages back, Ori and the Blind Forest has just been announced on Switch. Properly excited to pick it up, looks so perfect for the Switch.

Playing through DS2:SOFTS again, which was my first Souls game and the healing system (unlimited healing with lifegems but takes ages to heal), ridic numbers of mobs, huge enemy damage and extended recovery times for enemies contribute to a game which is either painfully punishing if you're new to the mechanics or a complete breeze if you already know how to play.

    Such a broken game.
