Ah okay. I see the problem now. I thought she was a kid and spoke to her as such but apparently she's an adult. Sorry.
I am proud of this post.

Looked into it, there actually is a Power Level increase. Take back a lot of what I said.

Wait there are lootboxes in Forza too now? This **** is a ****ing epidemic. Worst thing to happen to games for ages.

Not even paid marketing on reddit and buying out all the moderators can save EA from the Battlefront scandal.

It's about time there was some proper backlash against microtransactions. I keep seeing on steam people defending absurd prices for the most minimal additions of content that should have accompanied a game on release and it's just bizarre.

There should've been pushback ages ago but when it comes to games (or really most topics) the media picks the strangest controversies to cover while completely ignoring some truly insidious business practices. The lootbox gambling stuff should be mainstream news but they'll just continue to ignore it and blame Counter Strike for the next mass shooting.

It’s too complex for mainstream news IMO. Too much explaining for the broadcast media audience

"Video games are getting your kids addicted to gambling" seems a simple headline for them to come up with.

God I’d hate that. Is there any actual sign that pay to win games are aimed at children gambling? Doesn’t all data point to whales being the drive behind loot boxes? And that it isn’t an urge to gamble but rather a means to accelerate deliberately slowed progression systems?

Shark cards or any sort in game currency that can be used to buy an advantage over other players being incentivised is the problem. Not random chance being used as part of a progression system. Does anyone really view Dota, or Overwatch or CounterStrike’s lootbox systems as a plague on gaming?

It's definitely gaining traction in the UK.

Has been debated by Parliament and everything.

Not necessarily. Forget the in-game progression entirely. On a basic level I think when someone, especially someone really young, is playing a game and he sees something he wants (not necessarily to even progress in the game, it can be a badass looking costume) there's immediately a desire to get it. In a way giving you that option to buy it then and there and just paying the money to get what they want would be a far better system, although still pretty ******.

Instead if you want it, you're forced to buy crates for a "chance" to get it. That in itself is troublesome imo. I've literally seen kids waste hundreds of bucks on crate after crate thinking they'll get that weapon skin they really want. It just doesn't sit right with me at all.

I obviously wouldn't go far as the headline I jokingly posted but it's just so goddamn filthy.

It's paying money for a randomised chance at winning something. I.e. gambling.

Well the design is very obviously based on the same psychological research as the pokies, both in terms of the risk-reward structure and the flashy aesthetic. A lot of kids play the games, and the safeguards are weak tstl.

But even if we don't all please think of the children, it's clearly going to be an issue for problem gamblers. The whole microtransaction industry is deeply unethical imo.

I can get on board with it when it comes to free-to-play games tbh. That's not to say I approve, I don't. It's still very murky. But in lieu of paying a full price for a game it makes logical sense, and might not be that bad, depending on how it is implemented.

The way it has seeped into mainstream titles from major developers is an absolute pox on what is already a pretty unpleasant industry though.

Also lets you sell the thing you won for real cash, like all those CSGO trading sites.
