I can see it now
Doctor: Time can be re-written Amy: I thought you couldn't go back into your own time stream or anything, destroy the universe that sort of thing Doctor: That what I thought before BUT....time can be re-written Rory: So you're saying we can go back and change history? That doesn't seem right. I mean if it were true wouldn't someone have already done that? Like the second world war? Amy: Yeah surely someone would've been all 'let's kill Hitler!' Doctor: Yes! A great suggestion! Let's kill Hitler! *title theme*

Just on AGOT IMO one of the reasons the 4th and 5th books have taken so long to finish (and possibly declined in quality slightly) is because Martin has had so much to do on the TV series. If he's able to spend less time on subsequent series he'll likely get through the books quicker. I don't know the guy, but I would have thought he wouldn't want to see the books drag on and risk not seeing them finished and being able to watch them all on screen would be a motivator you would think.
On the series itself I've been reasonably impressed, but I think it could have been done a bit better. (I'm serious about the following spoiler alert btw)
They've held very true to the books, but they've glossed over some of the more important plot elements, while being too heavy handed with others. For example the wolves are treated as afterthoughts, and only included when they have a direct impact on another part of the story (Summer rescuing Bran, Nymeria attacking Joffrey etc). The relationship between the wolves and their masters is a huge part of the books, and I don't think they do that justice in season 1. The history of the war and how it has shaped the world the characters live in, and Catelyn's relationship with her sister are two other important parts of the story that I think wouldn't make sense if you hadn't read the books. The season is only 10 episodes so I think they could have managed to fit it all in if they added an episode or two (hardly making it overly long when compared to other HBO productions). On the flip side Littlefinger's ambition is portrayed with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. All throughout the books you're never quite sure where he stands. There's no scene where he just jumps up and says "BTW I really want everything." I loved the fact that you never really knew where the guy stood, and even after betraying Ned there was still some level of doubt over whether he was doing it for love (albiet a very twisted love) or ambition. I would have liked a bit more subtlety with the sex scenes too. I'm no prude but I would have liked to learn about the dragons or Littlefinger's past by some method other than over a prostitute engaging in badly acted pillow talk in a bathtub or a whore having an orgasm in a brothel. There was explicit sex in the book, but it always seemed to be done as something that just happened as a matter of course (as it does in life), in the show they slam you across the face with it and frankly I think it's done very tacky. It also means you probably shouldn't watch it with someone you wouldn't be comfortable watching porn with (your parents/children).
Should point out that other than that I think it's absolutely fantastically brilliant. Loving it to bits in general. It really is one of the great stories of our time imo.

River (assuming you mean River) is better now, but I still think that Kingston is the weakest actor/does the weakest portrayal of her character of the "main 4". --- That title is lol. Still, only a title... Moffat is such a troll though. Pretty sure that it is at least in some respects a playful reference to the fact that the standard "let's rewrite time for the better" story is to kill said Austrian.

Unaware of its existence until 30 seconds ago.
Luther started very strongly last night. Alice Morgan a strong contender for telly's sexiest psychopath, IMHO. Only 4 episodes tho? That's pish, BBC. HTFU.

Americans being a bit precious really. Not sure of the exact details either, but if you know Skins, you know the issues it deals with. Add in a 17 year old cast member or two, and oh noes.
