    GRAND FINAL

    A Day In The Life
    (Lennon/McCartney)
Originally released on Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, June 1967

I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grave
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
    I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
    They'd seen his face before
    Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.

I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
but I just had to look
    Having read the book
I'd love to turn you on

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
and Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on

    VERSUS

    Strawberry Fields Forever
    (Lennon/McCartney)
Originally released as a double A-Side with Penny Lane, February 1967

    Let me take you down
cause I'm going to strawberry fields
    Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
    Strawberry fields forever

Living is easy with eyes closed
    Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
    But it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me

    Let me take you down
cause I'm going to strawberry fields
    Nothing is real
and nothing to get hung about
    Strawberry fields forever

No one I think is in my tree
I mean it must be high or low
That is you know you can't tune it
    but It's all right
That is I think it's not too bad

    Let me take you down
cause I'm going to strawberry fields
    Nothing is real
and nothing to get hung about
    Strawberry fields forever

    Always know sometimes it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think a "No" will mean a "Yes"
    but it's all wrong
that is I think I disagree

    Let me take you down
Cause I'm going to strawberry fields
    Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
    Strawberry fields forever
    Strawberry fields forever
    Strawberry fields forever

Same final as in 2007, FTR

    Suitably epic, I think.

Will have to go for A Day in the Life tho. I think, of anything that might broadly be called "popular music", it's perhaps the tune to hold up and show what the pop song format is capable of.

The color of immortality, nature and envy - you are truly a unique person. While clearly the color of nature, you also symbolize rebirth, fertility and hope in the world. On the other side of the spectrum, a natural aptitude to money with green coming to signify money and possibly even *********!

    A Day In The Life.

    Reasons beautifully put by Brumby.

When I were nobbut a little lad in short trousers my Dad bought me an album called "A Collection of Beatles Oldies but Goldies" which had all the Beatles number 1's on it plus, just to ensnare the collectors I suppose, a cover of a song called "Bad Boy" - I played it to death and my favourite track was always Penny Lane, but folk kept telling me there was an even better Beatles song that had never been a single - I humoured them but I thought they were just having a laugh at me - but then when I got to the age of about 11 a mate of mine got a copy of Sergeant Pepper from somewhere and the words "A Day in the Life" jumped out at me and I heard it for the first time, and realised that my parent's friends hadn't been laughing at me after all

    I'm presuming that's a vote

I vote for Strawberry Fields Forever, surprisingly enough

Musically very inventive with a genius arrangement and some outstanding sounds. Love the mellotron.

Lyrically, one of my favourites. An ode to nostalgia and longing mixed with a discussion of individualism and being misunderstood.

A beautiful song. Seems a shame that popular music peaked in 1967 but I don't think it will ever be bettered.

I'll vote for 'A day in the life' as well. I'm struggling to add anything to what's been said already, so I'll leave it there. Thanks to Martyn for organising the thread, which has been a fab read over the last few weeks.

Well, I'll wait for pasag's vote before I make any official statements....but I think that settles it

As Brumby said when the fabs won BOTB, it's how you get there that counts and I hope you've all enjoyed it as much as I have.

I've had a real affinity to Strawberry Fields Forever, ever since visiting the shrine to John at Central Park. It's such a fantastic song and worthy of the final.

That said, this isn't a hard decision. A Day in the Life is the Bradman of pop music, double as good as the next song. The best of Paul, the best of John. It's hard to say why it's perfect, but you know that when you still smile after listening to it for the 500th time, you're onto a winner.

Many thanks to GIMH btw, for keeping me in the loop in this fantastic battle.

So, A Day In The Life takes the crown, comfortably and all, 5-2. It's breezed through the whole thing, (except for the Quarters where a few of us voted tactically assuming everyone else would vote for it) in fact until we reached the third round it had only dropped one point out of a possible 170.

I may not have voted it here but it's a deserved winner. I'm a firm believe in subjectivity in music with the exception of when people call this fine band overrated, because it is not just their songs that people rate, but their achievements. There is so much we take for granted in popular music that might not yet have been tried or put to the test but for these lads from just across the river. And I thank you all for sharing this passion with me and taking the time out to vote and lend your opinions.

We did it in 07 and 11 so see you all in four years I guess

Yeah, it's been emotional, as they say. Worthy winner (right decision for my quid).

Fair play to Coz for the hard yards.
