Moving to Melbourne from Sydney

Hey everyone, just accepted a job offer in Melbourne starting next week and am typically very nervous about the big move, ie leaving all the family and friends behind.

I've heard a lot about the so called 'rivalry' that exists between the two places and it's got me thinking a lot about whether the differences in culture and lifestyle are actually as big as people seem to be making them out to be, and how hard it will be for me to settle into the new city, making friends and all that.

Some feedback from anyone who's lived in both cities for any length of time on what to expect from Melbourne, would be greatly appreciated.

Good move. Sydney is the anchor weighing Australia down IMHO. Get with the strength... (And if you don't already support an AFL team, pick one or you're be a social outcast. Collingwood is the best, don't listen to what the haters try to tell you!)

Haha, was going to say that actually. Second thing people ask you after your name - what side do you support. Carlton ftw btw.

My advice: whatever date you've got in mind to make the move, make it sooner than that.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. People have been killed in Melbourne for admitting they're from Sydney.

You've been warned.

You'll have to change your wardrobe because Melbourner's dress differently; better IMHO, less flashy and trendy - more stylish though. Also it's freezing down there so buy yourself a nice warm coat.
You have to get in the left lane to turn right in the metro areas, which is a bit weird but has something to do with the trams. Also, Melbourne's roads are a grid layout, so if you make a wrong turn just go around the block, which is cool, because in Sydney if you make a wrong turn you're screwed lol.
Nightclubs are harder to find, usually down some obscure, dodgy-looking back-alley, but the deeper you dig the better they are IMO.
Melbourners tend to be a bit more friendly, you can actually have a conversation with a stranger on a tram or train, which is unheard of in Sydney.
People'll probably disagree with me, but I reckon crime is worse in Melbourne than in Sydney, like there seems to be a bit of a druggie problem down there which isn't limited to a just few suburbs. So yeah, be a bit mindful of that.
