Battle of the current bands
It's now well over a year since the original Battle of the bands was concluded with a victory for The Beatles. Since then we've had many pale imitations of this seminal thread (more than one started by me, probly
), but nothing has quite matched its grandeur & scope. As an attempt at a worthy sequel (if that isn't an oxymoron) I propose a battle where only bands who're still recording are eligible. I think it'll mean less inevitability in the outcome. Any definition of a "current band" is going to be fairly arbitrary, so (unless anyone has violent objections) I'll define one as a band (i.e. no solo artists) who have released an album of new material in the last five years & haven't announced a split. By this definition the reformed Pixies or Crowded House aren't eligible as they've yet to commit any new stuff to vinyl, but (if you were so minded) the equally-reformed Take That would be, as they have released an album of new songs. I've no hard & fast ideas about how many bands should be entered (32, 48 or 64 seem the most likely, dependant on uptake) before battle is joined, but to secure a place any band must be seconded to avoid those of you with the more whacky tastes in music entering unworthy groups. Nominate as many as you like, but I'll impose an initial limit of 8 secondings so no-one can hog the nominations that way. Ok? Right, to start the ball rolling I'll nominate:Doves Elbow REM Maximo Park

I'm not convinced with the exclusion of "solo artists", simply because the distinction between the two is an arbitrary one. Most titled solo artists have full time band members anyway, while all the writing and marketing for some "bands" is entirely centred around one member.
Other than that, good thread idea. Coming up with nominations is tough though. Makes me realise how few "current bands" I actually like. I'll try and pick bands I think should be in there rather than just personal favourites. Nominate: The Decemberists Tool The Mars Volta Bloc Party edit: Make this a second, missed PF's post. Second: Mogwai Muse

I would suggest The Roots, but they are a hip-hop band.
