    Free Speech

"A new federal law that came into effect at midnight makes it illegal to transmit by phone, internet or fax any information that directly or indirectly incites suicide or provides instructions."

Can someone explain to me why CDM's thread was just closed?

It is an interesting and debatable subject, and as i see it that link provided by 16ToS does not make it illegal for discussion over the internet, especialy as it says "incites suicide" not euphanasia.

Come on moderators, OT is quite pathetic of late, the only thing people talk about it Rodgie constant twatishness and how dire OT is, can't we be allowed some interesting discusion????

OT's always pathetic "of late", it just depends who's saying it!

It was closed because there's genuine danger of the forum being taken to task for illegal discussion - quite fair enough.

I believe Neil closed the thread to prevent any Australians getting themselves in trouble. I don't agree with him though, the rest of us have no such ridiculous restrictions on free speech.

I do think though, that merely discussing euthanasia could be seen by the Australian authorities as "indirectly inciting" if the opinion offered agrees with it. Dire, IMO.

Agree at the closure of the thread considering the law, but I think the law is ridiculous.

My concern was that James - and therefore the whole website - is Sydney-based.

If James is happy to re-open it then I have no complaints but I would rather be initially overly cautious than lock the stable door after the horse has **** all over the fan.

I was checking to see if the filter would pick it up. Obviously we need to educate it about past participles.

I can see why the thread was closed, but boy that's a woolly law. Indirectly inciting suicide? If Oz choke in the WC (and God knows we're all praying up here) will Punter & the chaps be arrested if one of their more sensitive fans takes a header off Sydney Harbour Bridge?!?

It doesn't work like that, James can be wherever he wants, it's where the website is hosted from that matters.

What's really worrying is that no-one seems to be aware of the law. It was being discussed as early as June 2005, when I was living in Melbourne, yet I never heard a peep from the media about it until I returned to New Zealand in January 2006. Such a fundamental attack on free speech should provoke outrage.
