Create a "Best Of"

Does one of your favourite bands not have a decent Best Of collection available?

Perhaps you'd just like to see a collection of said band's songs from a certain era available on one album.

Perhaps it's a new band that doesn't have enough album material to record a Best Of yet, but whose live recordings, B-sides and rarities would make for a good album on their own.

Whatever the case, I thought it might be interesting to come up with some ideas for something like this. I got the idea when I was thinking earlier about how if Guns N' Roses had released Use Your Illusion as one album instead of two, it would have been a lot better. So without further ado, I present...

Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion

1. Civil War
2. Don't Damn Me
3. Bad Obsession
4. November Rain
5. Locomotive
6. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
7. Double Talkin' Jive
8. You Could Be Mine
9. Get In The Ring
10. Estranged
11. Yesterdays
12. Live And Let Die
13. Don't Cry

And another one, just for good measure - I've even named it, I'm that cool...

Hyper Music - The Best Of Muse 2001-2006

1. New Born
2. Starlight
3. Citizen Erased
4. Map Of The Problematique
5. Plug In Baby
6. Sing For Absolution
7. Darkshines
8. Assassin
9. Time Is Running Out
10. Showbiz
11. Bliss
12. Supermassive Black Hole
13. Invincible
14. Muscle Museum
15. Hysteria
16. Feeling Good
17. Stockholm Syndrome
18. Knights Of Cydonia

Good idea. If AC/DC ever released such an album, it should look like this:

AC/DC - Strap it on: 2 Discs

1. Hell's Bells
2. If you want blood
3. Back in black
4. Gone Shootin'
5. Ballbreaker
6. Jailbreak
7. T.N.T
8. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
9. Rocker
10. Highway to Hell
11. High Voltage
12. Shot Down In flames
13. What's Next to the moon?
14. Thunderstruck
15. Ain't No fun (waiting around to be a millionaire)
16. Its a long way to the top
17. Bedlam in Belgium
18. Shoot to thrill
19. Guns for hire
20. Let there be rock
21. Whole lotta rosie
22. For those about to rock (we salute you!)

"You Shook Me all night long" misses out due to it being a pop music song.

I'll have a go at a Nick Cave one. Exclusively for the Bad Seed period, roughly split between the old and new material, but with a bias to the pre-Nocturama stuff, largely because it's better. Only two studio albums missing material.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Best Of
01. Cabin Fever!
02. Saint Huck
03. Tupelo
04. Train Long-Suffering
05. Your Funeral... My Trial...
06. The Carny
07. Sad Waters
08. The Mercy Seat
09. Deanna
10. Papa Won't Leave You, Henry
11. John Finn's Wife
12. Do You Love Me?
13. Red Right Hand
14. The Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane
15. Henry Lee
16. Into My Arms
17. West Country Girl
18. As I Sat Sadly By Her Side
19. Darker With The Day
20. O Children

So much good stuff left out, even with 20 tracks.

Haha, I thought you'd pick up on that. Oddly I also thought you were the one I first heard say that.

TBH though, as much as I love the UYI albums, there's a bit of filler on there which could have been reserved for B-sides or even another separate album further down the line - the track listing I've provided would have been a damn good effort on its own.

Excellent idea for a thread!

I'll do my favourite band first. I'll limit myself to fourteen songs as it seems a decent length for a best of compo. The order is simply vaguley chronological.

Crisp Songs, Salted Lyrics: The Best of The Smiths

1) Hand in Glove (Hatful of Hollow version)
2) Reel Around The Fountain (The Smiths version)
3) What Difference Does it Make? (Hatful of Hollow version)
4) This Charming Man
5) Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now
6) Please, Please, Please Let me Get What I Want
7) How Soon is Now?
8) What She Said
9) That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore
10) The Queen is Dead
11) I Know it’s Over
12) Cemetry Gates
13) Death of a Disco Dancer
14) Paint a Vulgar Picture

& the best pop band ever:

Forever Fabulous: The Best of The Beatles

1) Twist & Shout
2) A Hard Day’s Night
3) Daytripper
4) Norweigan Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
5) Paperback Writer
6) Eleanor Rigby
7) I’m Only Sleeping
8) Tomorrow Never Knows
9) Strawberry Fields Forever
10) Penny Lane
11) A Day in the Life
12) Lady Madonna
13) Helter Skelter
14) Come Together

It can't be done. Fourteen's too few!

How about condensing the Beatles White album into one disc, of not much more than 40 minutes.....

I have done it and its damned hard to do. Have messed with the running order so it sounds more like a proper album.

SIDE ONE

1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Glass Onion
4. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
5. I'm So Tired
6. Everybodys Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey
7. Julia

SIDE TWO

1. Birthday
2. Revolution 1
3. Sexy Sadie
4. Cry Baby cry
5. Helter Skelter
6. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Now that my friends would have had the makings of maybe the greatest album of all time, as it is it has to make do with maybe in the all time top 10
