It's not a metre, it's a meter.

*Sigh*, when are you off to school?

If I recall correctly that's how Aussies spell it?

Naah, that's how you spell a metre, a meter is still a meter.

'That's one metre high'

'The gas meter has run out'

When your talking about the measurement, meaning 100 centremetres, it's spelt M-E-T-R-E.
In this case, it's meter. Like "Irony meter".

edit: Fine MM can explain it.

If Aussies spell it that way, they are wrong.

Reminds me of a classic Eddie Izzard line:

"I always find the linguistic differences between Britain and America very interesting. Like how [they] say "sidewalk", and we say "pavement". They also say "erbs", while we say "h-erbs" - because there's a ****ing H in it."
