Have tickets booked for The Happy Mondays (well, Shaun, Bez, Gaz the drummer & some session stiffs, really) on 29th May & I'm going to see Madness at the Newmarket races on July 20th.

Like to keep up with modern bands, me.

Anyone know of any decent gigs in Brisbane over the next week or so? Or any decent bars with live music?

Really dont want to go to Leeds but the missis is insisting (she's never seen the chili's live unlike me). Absolutely loving the line up for V the week before but cant go

Anyone else go to the "V Festival" today in Sydney, or planning to go tomorrow in Queensland? Gotta say, The Pixies were fantastic. I was actually expecting a fairly mediocre show based on the fact that they're 15 years past their prime and a clip of them on a recent tour that was average, but they tore the place apart. "Caribou" and "Gouge Away" were highlights, even though they aren't songs I'm overly fond of compared to their other stuff normally. Among the ones I expected to be good, "Debaser", "Planet Of Sound" and "Where Is My Mind?" were all fantastic. Slots comfortably into the top 5 live performances I've seen, and they totally outshone Beck, who I also expected to be crap, but was easily the second best on the night. Frank Black's still got a scream that could kill a man, and I'm quite pleased that I saw them on their only ever tour of Australia.

Jarvis was okay. Good songs, good performance, but nothing much you wouldn't have got from his album. The New York Dolls were pretty bad, as you might have thought, but they improved from laughable to pretty decent as the set went on, and "Personality Crisis" did have some energy about it. Didn't bother with the other bands.

In other concert news, I went to an "exclusive album launch" of the new Silverchair fare last night, as I was given a ticket by someone who won them. I've somehow managed to see Silverchair live three or four times now and they're never any good, but it was an open (read: free) bar. I didn't think such a thing existed these days, but it does, and I took full advantage.
Just came back from the Gold Coast. Oh my God the Pixies! UNBELIEVABLE! Best 75 minutes of my life. Beck had terrible accoustics and a cold but still put on a great performance. Rapping bears and a dinner table. Jarvis was fantastic as expected. My mate got him to sign a Pulp CD and he personalised it...top bloke.

Gnarls Barkley were also great. The opened with Another Brick In The Wall. Didn't mind Softlightes either.

Can't imagine anything that better than that Pixies gig though. They did an encore of La La Love You and Gigantic and played almost all of Doolittle.

Yeah I expect the sets were quite similar. Started with "In Heaven" and "Wave Of Mutilation", finished the main set with "Where Is My Mind?" and the encore was the same.

Supposedly the secret gig they played at the Northcote Social Club, and the one they played at the Palace (I think) the next night, both had exactly the same setlist.
