... who actually likes the idea of Valentine's Day?

It seems to get bagged from pillar to post by many, and even those who don't bag it seem fairly neutral to it - as if they wouldn't care if it didn't exist.

Lots of girls like it, others hate it. There aren't too many neutral on the matter.

Me though - I like it. I don't see it as very important for couples that are already together and have been for quite some time, but I do see it as a great opportunity for people show others that they care about that they want to progress the relationship. Whether you exist in simply in a friendship or a less-than-serious dating relationship, V-day gives an opportunity to progress matters without it being random, and the very fact of the day makes it romantic no matter what you do.

Am I alone in these thoughts?

I agree with you saying that Valentines Day is a good chance to "progress matters without it being random" but some of the crap that they bring up around this time of year is just crap. All in all, it's a pretty fun reason to have a laugh or a special moment with a friend of the opposite sex.

V-day, as you call it, was seen as a joke when I was younger for pranks and winding people up. I guess if you want to ask someone out or something then it's probably the best day for it. Though I'd probably just say don't wait for V-day, grow some balls and get on with talking to the boy/girl.

That's all off-the-record. On the record I would say it is a conspiracy by Clinton Cards to increase their profit margins.

Well I'm single now, and have in fact always been single, and I still quite like the idea of it. It seems to get a royal bagging though, due to the over commercialisation mainly, but lots of special days have the same over commercialisation and yet are still shown with a great deal of respect.

I actually took advantage of it last year - it didn't pay off but it gave me the inspiration really to advance the relationship beyond a friendship (although I failed). I don't have any aspirations this year (except the same friend yet again, but that is sadly a lost cause) but I still like the idea and the feeling surrounding it that there are thousands who had the same anticipation and exciting I had last year - who just might accomplish something.

As I said, I don't rate it at all important for already-existing couples, but it's a good day for aspiring relationships.

It's stupid IMO. Admittedly, have never had a girlfriend at the time, but what's the point? If you want to take her out some place nice and give her a gift or something, why do you have to wait for a horribly over-commercialised day to do it?

Yeah, if it wasn't so horribly over-done by shops and restaurants plus prices of flowers weren't increased for that day only then I'd have a little more time for it. It's not pleasant though when others around you get stuff and you don't. Well I didn't find it nice anyway.

Good on you for taking the plunge but why didn't you do it before? The whole point of Valentine's Day in the first place was for the people involved to have anonymity wasn't it?

In practice it can be perfectly pleasant, but therotically there's plenty of reasons to hate it. Much like Father's Day, it's an entirely commercially-oriented "holiday" with minimal historical relevance. It works well as an ironic celebration opportunity, though.

Valentines day IMO is a day to really go over the top. If you did that all the time, you might scare her away by being labeled "creepy" or a "stalker".
