Is Chess a Sport?

This was thrown around last night at the pub due to a story one of my mates saw a couple of weeks back, apparently people are pushing for chess to be included at the next olympics, the arguments for it go along the lines of the psychological challenges etc. the argument against is that you just sit on your butt and do not much.

Is chess a sport? Is chess a game? I believe it to be a game played for leisure, something similar to checkers or poker even.

Chess already has its own olympics, it will not be included in the regular olympics.

As to if it is a sport - no for mine, just a game.

Something like that. I was reading about it a while ago, it's a pretty hilarious concept.

I don't think it is. There's no form of physical endurance involved. Mental, yes; but then you could argue things like Monopoly, Scrabble and <insert name of another well-known board game here> are sport; which they aren't.

Not a sport.

But if physical exertion is a prerequisite for an olympic sport, archery, shooting and curling should all be ditched.

I agree with it not being a sport but all those you mention test physical attributes [like depth perception, steadiness of hand, controlling of breathing, eyesight] in some way.

I'm sure a blind, asthmatic lady with the shakes could still manage to play chess if she had the mental capacity.

I don't know about physical exertion being a requirement for sport.
