    WRT The Smiths being so called, IIRC "Smith" was the name of Myra Hyndley's in-laws & Moz was reading a book on The Moors Murderers at about the time they formed.
    I remember watching an interview or something such with Morrissey in which he mentions that The Smiths is an 'ordinary' name because he wanted their music to be about/for ordinary people or something in that vein. Most likely a combination of reasons for the name.

    TBF he copped an absolute shedload of stick from our esteemed tabloids in the 80s about Suffer Little Children, which was traduced as somehow glorifying the muderers (totally arse-about-face, of course; it's actually utterly haunting in its elegiac sympathy to the children's fate & some of their strongest work) so he'd be unlikely in the extreme to admit the Hyndley theory as the truth.
