One thing that is attracting quite a few people to teaching is that, you know what you're going to be when you decide to choose that course. A lot of people get stuck doing these degrees that don't really prepare them to enter the workplace, and find themselves lost at the end, or halfway through it. People like the certainty that they know what they'll be doing at the end of it, what they should be applying for.

Nah undergrads are still useless... Thankfully the complete no-hopes stop showing up unless you're stuck with first years. Kinda hate the teaching tbh, but I suppose you'd be stuck doing more grant applications if you did less teaching which isn't exactly better.

Sadly its kinda hard to give out zeros in math. Generally if they've written something down its right enough to not get 0 as they often don't have the balls to put down complete crap.

I've got some comments on school level education but I might come back to it later when I oraganise my thoughts.

Honestly reckon the standard of teaching in public schools has gone down because it's too appealing. Lowering UAI's needed to get in, the attractiveness of working 8.30-3 or whatever it is. Decent pay considering you don't have to be too smart to do it. Virtually guaranteed to get a job upon graduating. Hot bed for dead ****s. You get people who are becoming teachers not because they want to or they're good at it, but just because they can.
Hahaha, working 8:30 - 3? You're obviously talking about us ESL teachers who get paid for 4 hours a day and don't have to do too much prep. As TC said, anyone with half a brain is doing something else...

And for those who think it's easy, adult students are a pain in the arse a fair amount of the time, I can't imagine standing in a class full of kids who don't give a **** (actually, I can, I did it in Korea, was ****ed).

I think the main problem with being a teacher is that in Australia the prevailing attitude is that "nobody works harder than I do". Usually the ****s going around telling everyone about it are doing **** all themselves.

Yeah, can't disagree with that but, owing to what I've bolded above, it can still be an okay activity. At least it's not as bad as this at the moment. We don't have the same culture of standardised testing as in the US, of course, but it's still here.

Nah. Pretty much impossible to see this government, particularly Gillard, to make a comeback.

All I can see is a 'less than a 55-45 defeat'. Wasn't Rudd leading by similar margins in 2007?
