They messed up by not telling us the truth about Rudd being removed as leader. Allowing the 'poll' meme to go on too long it's only reasonable that the media point out what a mistake the move was (based on original reasons).

If they carpet bombed Rudd initially, like they did when he challenged, I think polls would have less edge. No doubt the ALP's true enemies are within their own party rather than in opposition.

Burgey, genuine question. What did you think of Gillard's speech at the ACTU today? And the general view against 457 visas?

    Thanks for your call Jono.

I haven't seem the speech so I would be guessing.

The 457 visa position is pretty cynical IMO. They are necessary because no country can produce enough of its required skill set, except England and meteorologists. So they are necessary.

To the limited extent they're rorted, it's by employers, who import cheap unskilled labour and pay them far lower rates, not the visa holders themselves. But you won't really hear that because in just saying the system is being "rorted" it leaves the impression they're having a crack at the darkies and not good, white, hard working Auatralian bosses who are in no way struggling because they're **** business people operating an outmoded business model. They've just fallen on hard times, that's all.

Yesterday's job numbers saw the highest one month increase in employment since the year 2000. 70,000 jobs created, nearly 18,000 of them full time. And just when school leavers entered the market.

    Unemployment 5.4%
    Inflation <3%
    Cash rate 3%
    Annualised growth of 3%
    Govt debt 10% of GDP
AAA Rated by every ratings agency

All while the rest of the developed world has gone to hell in a hand basket.

But what about Pink Batts?!? School halls?!? The Carbon Tax Lie!?!?
    Incompetent!!! Resign!!

Tories really are ****wits. Some are born ****wits, others acquire their ****wittedness. Some are decent company at dinner parties, others know how to crack a joke. Of course, most of them are just sour ****s you wouldn't piss on if they were on fire.

But they all have that Tory scowl, and they can never smile. Only sneer.

****s. Every last one of them.

The last place I worked used 457's as a way to control wage growth as once someone is signed it can be difficult to move, with the big money in mining or working for consultants, getting people with 10+ years experience who want to work in manufacturing can be difficult. Not that project managers get paid peanuts, it's just a high stress job that is underpaid in Aus relative to easier contract management for government at 30%+ more an hour.

The exploitation of the 457 visa issue is dog whistling at its worst...

Even worse is, there's no real problem Labor can point to

One of the things I loved about it was Tone coming out and saying that the Liberal party would never discriminate against anyone based on where they come from.

Do these ****wits listen to what they say? And do they honestly think we don't remember a week ago?

And if we're serious about cracking down on people rorting the system, then all you'd really have to do is wander in to the local Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Turkish/South American/Taiwanese/name your nationality here who is selling meals at their restaurant for low prices and paying their staff **** all. It'd be like shooting fish in a barrel. If your local restaurant has a ****load of staff and low-priced meals then there's a decent chance they're ****ing over their staff. One of my old students got offered $5 an hour to work in a Korean restaurant...and the bastards had the front to ask her to pay a $100 uniform deposit.

Of course, the biggest issue would be getting said staff to complain. The second biggest would be saying goodbye to $7 katsu curries.

Finally got to watching 4 Corners ep on Obeid.

Only moved to Sydney in 2011 so had never heard of this slimeball, how the **** did this not blow up earlier in NSW? I mean 4 Corners tackled how the main part of the corruption - the mining tenement deal/land sale - was recent... but just politically, it sounded like Obeid has been pulling the strings in NSW Labor for years and years.

    Disgraceful stuff.

Yeah saw it too. I didn't follow the corruption bit particularly closely tbh, just the behind-the-scenes powerbroking stuff was bad enough for me.
