If Abbott's the leader in 2013, the Libs need Gillard there at the next election.

Polls in this range, at this time, guarantee that.

She's one of the few politicians who Abbott bests in a popularity contest.

If it runs to its normal four-week cycle, by my reckoning there's a Nielsen due out tomorrow.

People who say polls this far out don't matter, overlook the fact that polls are the prism through which the gallery report, through which events are interpreted.

The reason they say polls this far out matter is because so much can change so quickly that we might be looking back in six months and wonder if that all really happened, let alone two years.

Nielsen 55-45 from 57-43, which sounds about right given the general stream of polls lately.

    primaries are 30,45,14, movements of 0, -3 and +2.

approvals are gillard 39-57, movements of +6 and -5 (that's a bit extreme, slightly raised-eyebrow at that one), abbott 41-54, no movement either way (which is out of sync with other polls iirc, so also raised-eyebrow)

ppm is dead even at 45-45, +1 for gillard and -3 for abbott

that might play interestingly tomorrow morning.

regardless, the "dead-and-buried" catch-criers are definitely looking a little foolish now. not that she's anything like favourite to win but she's definitely in the game.

Burgey with the call of the week IMO.

Still, judging by the political commentary I've not been hearing in the office or at home (I live with a raging social lefty and moderate economic lefty) noone is really caring about politics at the moment. The steam has kinda run out on all the big talking points (carbon tax, boat policies etc...). I wouldn't trust the polls too much at the moment.

Totally agree. Haven't seen this much dissatisfaction with the respective political leaders ever before. If only Costello were still in parliament.
