you can't fight the Australian way of feeling sorry for themselves...people want to feel hard done by...like they are being screwed...
this carbon tax is a lightning rod for that...something for poeple to attach that woe is me attitude to

Labor Caucus has just broken up. Government will move to onshore processing of asylum seekers.
Labor's genius advisers out in force the last few days...with the following nuggets:
- When the legislation gets passed, make sure you hug and kiss and congratulate each other, and generally look smug
- Also make sure that you tell the Parliament that the tax can't be repealed, so cop that!
so after all this farcical nonsense we actually might end up with something approaching the right policy...PM @JuliaGillard to announce fast-track processing for asylum seekers, bridging visas to include right to work, houses in community.
Community processing would be great. I have wondered why we've been locking these people up when there's been calls by various employer groups that they need a lot of less skilled workers to do seasonal work.
Have to say, if this plays badly for the government I don't care. If it ultimately leads to people realising that asylum seekers arriving by boat aren't devils and have a lot to offer communities by working and living in them, then it's a bloody good price to pay imho.

I'm thinking it's because people don't give a **** about reason anymore and just want to quash the tax, hence he can say carefully crafted sentences and not be criticised.
Susan Mitchell with George Negus, on Channel 10's 6:30 last Friday:
NEGUS: What if Tony Abbott does become prime minister . . .
Mitchell: Be scared.
Negus: Be scared of what?
Mitchell: Be afraid, be very afraid. Because Tony Abbott will not, he will not govern for what the people of Australia want. Namely the majority of Australians want the euthanasia laws changed, the majority of Australians are in favour of gay marriage, the majority of Australians are in favour of stem cell research, the majority of Australians believe enshrined in law that women should have equal opportunity. He doesn't believe any of those things.
Negus: If he does become prime minister maybe people like yourself and a lot of other women . . .
Mitchell: Oh, I'll probably be locked up.
Who is Susan Mitchell, and why does that sentence read like her body's playing host to Germaine Greer?
