By no means is Newmann is a vote magnet, a messiah, fautless.

But, up against a 13 year old Government, you don't need to be.

You just need to be recognisable, regarded as competent, and not frighten the horses.

For mine, Newman ticks those boxes.

And the public's been aching for an alternative - not because Bligh's necessarily a monster, but it's just a function of having been in office for 13 years.

    Should be a blood bath.

Having Liberal state governments is really important for the Liberal Party's chances of winning back Government at a Federal level. Having Liberal State governments gives the party a whole lot of full time political staff, engaged people without other employment responsibilities, that it can draw upon for Federal election campaigns. Labor already has an army of such people in the union movement that they can draw upon, that are always prepared to go into battle, regardless of whether they're in government at a State level or not. But, for the Libs, only State government really gives them this vital "people infrastructure".

Just cast my 27th vote of the morning, and only 163 to go.

    Vote early. Vote often.

    In this case, very often.

Which planet have you been living on?

She's the most vile politician the state has seen since Gordon Nuttall.

I think they've done well to contain the swing to 21%

    Bloodbath!!

At least next election will be positive when the expected swing back to Labor occurs. The Greens really haven't transfered their recent rise into state political votes.

My two favourite members of the outgoing Government (Rees and Firth) are clinging on by the smallest of margins. Won't know their fate for a few days yet. Cliffhanger indeed.

Libs will be keen to make implications for federal Government. The only one that has any truth to it is that Oakeshott is gone. 31% swing against the independent in Port Macquarie.

More like an 8% swing against the independent.....the margin at the by-election fell like 25%.

Has there ever been such a hammering in a State election in Australia?

There are more seats now than before, but this is massive for NSW. Only thing vaguely comparable in my time would be the Wranslides of the 70s.

Edit: talk of John Robertson becoming LOTO. Here's a Labor Legend's view on him, as expressed directly in a letter, I'm October 2008.
