Yeah, but the risk is that if they don't get the bounce they'e hoping for, they will go on a pre-election spending spree and take the risk that rates won't rise.

Rudd looks like an idiot imo regarding the Dalai Lama issue. Just stupid to change your mind right after Howard pointed out the hypocrisy of his stance (I'm no Howard fan, but he's right).

But Howard did exactly the same thing. He's trying to see the DL as well, "if he can fit him in". What a joke. A Nobel laureate comes to Australia and they both act as if it's a great imposition on their time to see him.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...995239716.html

It burns my cheese the way the media just swallows the government line all the damn time. If the ALP/ Greens/ Dems or anyone else changes a policy, it's a backflip, but when Howard bows to IR pressure and inserts a safety clause into Workchoices it's "a legitimate position after listening to the Australian people". And no one ses fit to question him on it, save of course for Kerry at 7.30, but really, everyone knows Kerry used to work for Gough so he's hardly impartial either.

The tip is to watch the body language, I reckon. When KR's under the pump, look for the twiddling of the glasses. With JH, look for the shoulder twitching, especially the left one.

Anyway, on the DL issue, a pox on both their houses.

I hate the Dalai Lama, so I find the whole thing kind of funny. Still stupid, but funny.

John Howard's Dining Room

News from Senatew Estimates hearings is that the PM has a proposal to increase the size of the dining room in his Parliament House office suite to allow 20 at the table rather than the current 16. And apparently Jeanette had a say in the proposed works.

The cost to you for this little renovation? A miserly $475,000.00, for which one could build two reasonably sized homes, provided you had the blocks of land already.

What do you think? Reminds me of the dining table at the Lodge fiasco late in the Keating Government. IMO makes it look like he's out of touch.

He should go to Fantastic Furniture - "the Package deal kings!". They'll sell you a dining table set, and through in a couch, coffee table, and futon - all for under $3000...

Suppose so. As do 19 of his closest friends.

Go to the Lodge ffs. He doesn't live there so there should be plenty of free space to convert to a dining room.

Nearly had a kineption this morning when i read in the courier mail that the QLD Government has poured more than $1million wages, rebates etc. into Big ****ing Brother this season. You can subsidise some ****ed up television show, but refuse to subsidise plenty of others who are in desperate need for help, and will actually produce something of use for the State, and the economy as a whole. How about spending that money on fixing the ambo's system that you've subsequently screwed up, despite the fact that we're paying the the highest Ambulance levy we've ever paid. Such a gun way to run the place, get more money out of people, then let most of it go into thin air, and give us back a health & ambulance system that is in far worse condition now, than it was 7/8 years ago.

FFS Peter Beattie, you are the most dire of all dire people there has even been on the face of this earth. Put you and your government in charge of the Sahara Desert and i'd almost guarantee you'd need to import sand after 6 months.

Dog Days

Holy crap. She's going to be a long, cold winter.

Least for Coalition supporters (like myself, for instance) there's a whole six months to let go. There's forewarning for the trauma that may await on Election night! It's like a death - you can more readily cope with the aftermath of the loss if the death was a long, slow illness, than something unexpected. You can brace yourself, I guess.

Recent experience tells me you're spot on. It's easier, but no less bitter, if you can see the whammy coming.
