Tony Abbott talking about the possibility of the death penalty for terrorists today. Though it is not his policy...
The part about this that bothers me is that the poll on the Daily Telegraph is currently nearly 80% in favour of the death penalty.

Peter Garrett really does have to get the sack IMO. If he is such the environmentalist that he claims to be, he should of joined the Greens. It's good that he is put in measures to get rid of the cowboys in the industry, why not have them in the beginning to stop this from happening? If you can think of rebate idea and some laws to go with it, then it surely cannot be that hard to think of further measures so people won't take advantage of it, now legitimate operators are likely to make their employers redundant. If it were the Liberal party in charge, Labor in the Unions would be using this as political point scoring right up to the election.
I have never rated Garrett as a politician and if I lived in his electorate, I wouldn't vote for him. I would be surprised if he has ever done an honest days work in his life.

Not necessarily, but I think if you're the third wheel and a long way from power like the Greens, it's easy to stay pure of heart. Garrett's an interesting case, as are lots of pollies who come into the main parties from other areas where they've been free to espouse their personal views. He's simply the most high profile atm.
Do you stay outside the political system and agitate for major change, or enter the system and do your best (whether it's good enough or not is another matter) from within that system?
Interesting choice to make. And in Pete's case, you can't say he needed the cabbage or the security to become part of a major party.
He should never have been put in Environment.
He was always going to be seen as disappointing.
Maybe A-G or something - he is a trained lawyer. That way he could maintain his star power and popular appeal, sit in Cabinet, but not be seen as a hypocrite or as a disappointment.
Yeah, that's a good point tbh.

This is interesting to me personally because at the bottom of the article is my new boss. Wondering whether I'm going to work for Nick Naylor.
TBH, she seems very nice and it seems a great opprtunity. We'll see how it pans out, I guess. As far as MOD lobby groups go, ICAP seems pretty benign and doesn't attract a lot of attention.
