Glad that Rudd got elected. Not so worried if the ALP wins the next election anymore.

What were the issues for you, specific to Beazley?

If Gillard gets the shadow treasurery it will be a disaster. Real disaster.

Might as well come out and say it now. I'll vote for a Rudd led Labor in the next election if he doesn't do anything stupid. Don't kill me.

I'm pretty sure i heard that Beazly stated that he would be stepping down.

He'll stay on the backbench till the next election at least. He doesn't want a position on the frontbench though and he'll quitley slip away from politics over the next year imo.

Just watched the Howard press conference. He is clearly scared and will attack Rudd at every possibility.

I meant in order to have Rudd elected unopposed, not after the spill. Funnily enough, Macklin did stand down, so had the vote gone a different way, we may well have had the oddity of a Beazley/Gillard leadership team.

I saw in the news tonight that Rudd is demanding that he be able to select his own frontbenchers, rather than them being decided on factional lines. This could get pretty interesting.

Also, anyone see Howard refuse to address Rudd's opening question in the House as Opposition Leader? I think the hubris is maybe starting to show.

Of course he is, and of course he will.

Howard's lack of complacency is one of his biggest assets.

I'd say that the double blow of losing this contest and losing his brother in the same morning will be enough for Beazley to call it a day. Despite my reservations in recent times about him as a leader, he remains a genuinely decent and intelligent man (which may explain his lack of success against Howard) and its a sad way for him to go out.

The Beazley backers will surely need to find a new champion, but I'd say they'd be stupid to not fully support Rudd until the next election - if he wins, then they actually have some spoils worth fighting over, and if he loses, well it makes their job much easier.

I thought his final press conference was pretty moving, and you really felt for the guy. Think he did more harm than good to the party though, so I won't shed a tear about his loss.
