By what's been pasted in here I think I'll recieve the $950, as I'm currently unemployed (officially, do odd jobs cash in hand for mates such as labouring and stuff) and rely on Youth Allowance to get by (not easy, let me tell you). For all of those people about to type "get a job" I've been trying, been knocked back from about 40 in the last year because I don't have any experience in anywhere bar basic customer service, which isn't enough apparently. Around here at least.

That said, most of it will go straight to my roomate as I owe him a significant sum.

    Alright, need help in deciding what to do with the handout, guys. Four options;

    1) Put it into my share investments. Right now, I'd still be buying low and obviously as the market recovers, that's $950 working hard for me that wouldn't have been there otherwise. So that's nothing but win-win but my investment is for 7 years and I'm almost a year into it so won't reap the benefits for some time to come.

    2) $950 will buy around 4 flying lessons. However, if I do the above, I'll have more money available for said flying training when it gets really expensive in paying for airline transport pilot license

    3) Put it away for my trip overseas later in the year. I already have enough and will have more by then so it'll be more along the lines of spending money.

    4) Buy the guitar loop station and distortion pedals I've been lusting after. I've been putting away money for them but this will help me have them NOW.

Leaning towards 4), tbh, which is my hedonist side talking. Help me!

EDIT: Just thought I'd say that I'm not bleeding for the handout and I'd prefer it to be spent on stuff than just given away but if it's coming my way, I wanna do something good with it. And anyone who says '5) Donate to Salvo's' can GAGF.

Haha, like the idea of you taking the money overseas and spending it in another nation.

    Haha nice.

If I went on an Ebay splurge I'd be stimulating their(the US) economy wouldn't I? Or would some of it trickle down to here somehow?

Yeah, not a great short term political move though I imagine it's a longer term ploy if the economy doesn't pick up.

Good on Turnbull for opposing it. Government spending won't keep the wolves from the door. Any sustainable recovery can only come from the private sector. Government programs don't generate sustainable jobs. More of the money should be used to help employers/small business retain staff - not frittered away on roofing insulation, school buildings and handouts. Those programs are fine, but not worth putting the nation into massive debt for. Suspect Turnbull will get burnt though.

Anyway, Rudd is all over the place. When he entered Parliament he described himself as an old fashioned Christian socialist. Then, in the lead up to the election, he wanted to be John Howard and tie himself to whatever Howard was doing on the economy. He wanted to be an economic conservative. Now, he favours massive state intervention, and says the collapse is a failure of capitalism and of Liberal Party philosophy.

And, he's all over the place with his handling of the economy too. First he accused Costello of scaremongerng during the election campaign when Costello said correctly that there was a financial tsunami on the way. Then, when he won office, the whole focus he said was on cutting spending and 'putting the inflation genie back in the bottle'. A few months later, there is actual deflation! and the government (fresh from egging on the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates) lurches from one panicked spendathon to the next.

Unlike Costello, Rudd and the Reserve Bank did not see this coming, and he's clearly rattled. I think the Australian public sense it too.

    Get off my sunshine.

Largely AWhowardj on this one. Seems a bit hasty to hand the proletariat some roubles.

Still, the budget going to deficit isn't, in and of itself, a bad thing. Let's see where else they spend the money.

You're certainly right there, we saw it in recent elections too with the 'vote for us and we'll give you money' ploy. It works a little too well unfortunately.

Everyone seems to be in bed with Rudd. If Howard proposed such a thing the Reserve Bank would release a statement against within a day and from every corner:

-spend it on 'minority group x'
    -think about inflation

But it's all ok Superman Rudd will save us from Capatilism!
