Battle of the Songs - WINNER: London Calling by The Clash

    Battle of the Songs time.

I have taken 126 songs from the Rolling Stone list of 500 of the greatest songs of all time. I've seeded the top 32 so they are 'protected' (although all the songs a pretty damn good, so it might not make any difference).

For round 1 there will be two battles at once.

I've set up an excel document to track the progress, which can be downloaded from this post.

Battle will begin in next post.

Battles will last 24 hours or when a song has won by 15 votes or more (pretty much the same way as every other battle).

    I'm Green

The color of immortality, nature and envy - you are truly a unique person. While clearly the color of nature, you also symbolize rebirth, fertility and hope in the world. On the other side of the spectrum, a natural aptitude to money with green coming to signify money and possibly even *********!

I think you should take nominees, because CW members' taste of music is pretty different to what Rolling Stones magazine might adhere to.

Meh...They're all classic or very close to classic songs, so I doubt that anyone here wouldn't have heard (or like) at least 80% of the songs.

However, apart from the top 32 if there are any other songs people would like to see out or in, then fair enough.

I don't have the time to sift through posts of nominations and seconds, if someone else wants to go the the trouble, then be my guest, but this is quick and easy already set up list. Most of the songs are old, but like the saying goes 'oldies, but goodies'.

IMO a lack of Oasis songs makes this battle a bit of a joke - I'm not their biggest fan, but Q magazine's 100 Greatest Songs had Oasis at number one and number two. IMHO either you've got to take a cross-section of songs from different top 100 lists, or you've got to take nominations from CW members. The choice of songs in that list is ridiculously restricted.

Yeah, I was thinking that as I was doing the list and had a look for when the list was compiled, and couldn't find a date.

Well, Nirvana are in there, but they and U2 are about the most modern thing I can find. I doubt it's much later than 1995 or so tbh, which makes it extremely outdated.

    Ok.

    On 2nd thoughts.

We've got the list there. Let's have nominations for what should be removed and added. 3 removed and 3 replacements per member, then unlimited seconds. A song won't be removed until it has been seconded and a song won't be added until it is seconded.

Better off using a meta-list (like this one ) as they gather rankings from a lot more sources. You'll still get complaints about that though, so I suggest you just find something and stick to it. I don't think nominations will work at all, pretty hard to get any consensus on something as specific and subjective as favourite songs.

Discuss over the weekend. I'll finalise it Monday.

May I propose a rule where only songs that've been released as singles be nominated, so people who don't have the albums aren't alienated?
