Trouble is with these out-and-out comedies is, a bit like a sketch show, its very hard to maintain genuine hilarity all the way through. I'd say very few films have ever been start-to-finish ribtickling, so I tend to forgive a few misses here and there. I thought The Other Guys had enough about it just to be a really good comedy. Never actually seen Old School though, will have to test that out.

yeah true, I guess the better ones usually have other elements which keep them going.
Ones like the Wedding Crashers and the Hangover, even when their not particularly funny, are still just very entertaining because of the story etc. But, for me, ones like the Campaign sort of seem like everything is just there to anchor the jokes, rather than being entertaining in it's own right. Way too much thought being put into talking about those movies on this page. Hell of a lot more than what the film makers put in to making them too.

I would say Anchorman, Step Brothers, and Talladega Nights are the trinity that set the standard for Will Ferrell movies. Old School is superior to all three, but that wasn't really a "Will Ferrell" movie like the 3 that I mentioned are.

Saw Bourne Legacy and was a bit disappointed. Decent storyline and liked how they tied it to the original series, but it had a very slow start and took way too much time to set the scene. Very few fight scenes, but they were pretty good. Thought Damon was a better protagonist than the new guy (forgot his name).

Bourne Legacy. Very mundane. Totally forgettable.
Enjoyed it at first, but my enthusiasm quickly petered out. Was exactly like all the other Bourne films, only less interesting. Same old formula of some government agency desperately attempting to track down one of their super-soldier type agents, and a load of chases, explosions, shoot-outs, stunts and fights thrown in along the way. Bit of a shame really, as I thought the dialogue was actually really good (for this type of film anyway), and the characters were quite well done. The plot was just basically non-existant. It reminded me a bit of Die Hard 4.0 actually, in the sense that it was a film that just didn't need to be made. Struck me as a really obvious attempt to wring money out of what was once a reasonable enough franchise. Given the fact that the ending was totally inconclusive I imagine there are more in the pipeline too. |

Has anyone seen The Loved Ones? Was on Film4 last night as part of their frightfest season.
Was a bit too gruesome for my liking, but I thought it was fantastically well directed. Really creeped me out. |
