Saw (500) Days of Summer last night. I thought it might be one of the many films that by the time I get around to seeing them fall way short of all the good reviews I'd heard, but it wasn't. Although it was unsettlingly familiar for me in places, I thought it was a bloody good little movie actually. Some good laughs, and the performances by the two leads were excellent.

Really liked it personally. Unlike a lot of my friends and a few CWers I thought Zooey Deschanel was lovely, cold but fine.

    Joseph Gordon Levitt was brilliant.
    Direbirds FTW!

Movies I watched over the week:

Slumdog Millionaire: For some reason I was never really interested in watching this one. When I finally got down to watching it I thought it was fantastic. Exceptionally good movie on the whole.

Drag Me To Hell: Supposed to be a horror flick but I found myself rolling about laughing. Somehow it was hilarious in parts. Came off as cheap though. Ordinary movie at best but due to the humour added in, its alright for a watch.

Inkheart: Quite a silly storyline. Some lapses in logic in certain areas and the concept was somewhat amateur. Poor.

The Rocker: Slightly funny and extremely whacky but somewhat cheap and amateur as well. You can guess the ending and the storyline from the very begining of the movie. Very ordinary. Quite like Emma Stone though. Very cute.

I know many Indians who think Slumdog Millionaire is a highly, highly over-rated movie... I've seen many better Bollywood pot-boilers TBH.

I have seen more Indian films than many Indians
and I love Slumdog Millionaire.. There are only a handful of Bollywood films that have been able to capture the essence of the city called Mumbai...Satya and Salaam Bombay come to mind from the 90s..but Danny Boyle being an outsider achieving that feat is amazing..
Another aspect of the film I loved was the awesome cinematography...beautifully picturised. I never thought someone could film slums so aesthetically.

I found that scene kinda funny here and there lol. The best scene for me was that Iron falling on her head, that was just hilarious.

I reckon the movie was meant to have that weird combination of horror and humour. In that sense the tone of the movie seems to be split somehow between the two genres I'd say. In someways it comes across as somewhat innovative, but personally speaking, the combination of the two genres came across as a drop in quality of the overall effect.

I've seen a fair share of Bollywood flicks, some of them very good ones. I doubt I can call this a Bollywood movie although the influences are fairly heavy.

For me this movie portrays so many different aspects of life; swift globalization, timeless melodrama and an unlikely individual working hard and withstanding unbelieveably setbacks. It also portrays the reality of slums, not just in India, but in the entire third world.

I love the stark reality of this movie which I feel that many other movies fail to capture as they reach for somewhat overzealous heights. I also like the way the whole story is entwined around questions in that show. Found it to be a fascinating watch.

I totally agree. Both the movie and its music are over rated.

Yeah, AR Rahman has done some fabulous music in Bollywood/Tamil films compared to the mediocre fare he won the Oscar for in Slumdog Millionaire.

No comments about the music. Wasn't bothered too much about it tbh.
