Holding out for the future is not 'giving it a shot', place her quietly on the backburner whilst pursuing other interests. Simple.

Yes, that's what I'm doing.

The fact that I was out next night with another girl (whose date I had aleady organised weeks before) proves that I am pursuing other interests...

If by 'sense of justice' you mean 'urge to self-fornicate afterwards' then yes, I agree.

Interesting situation.

Met a girl twice in a big group social context. Anyway, she invited me to a dinner party (for which there were formal invitations), which I went to tonight.

Anyway I'm not sure whether she's actually interested in me or is just being really nice.

Let us know how that gets on.

Did you make plans to see her again?

In like Flynn.

A invitation to eat together means she's willing to engage in basic human survival strategies with you. Eating with you, breathing with you, sleeping with you et cetera.

Go forth and multiply. Though may be worth getting trollied first so you have a workable alibi should the unthinkable occur.

You're in imo. This is what happened with me and my ex, we happened to see each other in a "big group social context" after not having seen each other for several years (were acquaintances some years earlier)...had some drunken conversation and managed to get her number.... several weeks later she rather randomly text invited me to her 21st birthday party (in the guise of a "mass invite" type text). To my surprise, when I went, I realised she had only invited about 12-15 guests, despite her being quite a social butterfly. At the time I was naively still second guessing her intentions, but looking back it was obvious. Girl inviting you to social events where it doesn't really make sense for her to invite you= girl likes you.
