Just got this from wikipedia, under "nice guy" entry. Makes sense.

Tony Clink offers an explanation for why many women are attracted to the jerk rather than the nice guy:

"It's not because women like jerks. Women prefer polite over rude, and attentive over distracted. The problem is the way nice guys present these positive characteristics. In order to appear friendly and romantic, these 'nice guys' think they have to turn off their sexuality. They hide their desires in order not to offend, presenting an androgynous, asexual persona. The first impression they give is one of emasculation, weakness, and lack of desire. At best, they confuse the woman as to whether they even find her attractive. That's what jerks offer women that nice guys don't: they're not afraid to be sexual."[
I don't think thats the full story. I know of plenty of friendzoned dudes that definitely don't lay off the sexuality. I've been friendzoned and I never lay off the filthy *** joke mouth. I think its...not confidence, but "jerks" aren't afraid to get out there due to their egos. They take disappointment well because of that ego and they just move on to the next target that they don't really care for, whereas another person might take some time to recover, quite naturally, because they're a bit bummed.

I've done it before.... but that guy is a really good mate now and we've been good friends for almost 10 years (so that means I friend zoned him when we were like 14 so I guess that's a lot easier to get over?)
I don't think thats so much the issue as lack of communication. The old classic lead on. Guys and gals that consciously do this need a back hand.

There's also the yoyo. I got yo-yo'd once, she couldn't make her mind up. In the end I just dropped it. Its too hard to handle that, and the yoyo is likely to turn out them not wanting you but not wanting to admit it to themselves anyway. I could be wrong there of course.

I guess the long story short is, people are complicated.

I think you're only saying that because you're holding out some hope. It'll be torture...unless you're pretty confident you'll end up with more than just friendship of course.

You'll never 'just be friends' while you want more than that.

That's true. I am holding out for more somewhat in the future. "Holding out" is not the right phrase though. I'm trying not to be too much hope into us gettng together. But if it happens, it happens.

Meanwhile, she is such a great person in and of herself, that I would rather have her in my life, then not know her at all.

Haha, I've tried to use that one to justify things to myself several times. Doesn't end well in my experience.

If you find an SO by other means, then by all means revel in her friend zone. She'll be much more receptive if she doesn't think (read: know) you're undressing her in your head. She may even open up to you. In the emotional sense.

More importantly, knowing you're spoken for is the archetypal turn-on - millions of home-wrecking secretaries can't be wrong. If things go sour you'll be much better placed than before. In the carnal sense.
