I had the misfortunate to stumble across Scary Movies 3 tonight. Most definitely not a cinematic high though to be fair I did not have a clue of what films they were supposed to be parodying, other than the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee video.

I suppose if you are drunk or an adolescent whose clued up on MTV culture than the films could be rather enjoyable because they are reflective of a culture you enjoy but ultimately could never experience because itís completely intangible and ridiculously naÔve. The Scary Movie franchise and it's audience articulates a lot about todayís society.

The Scary Movie franchise isn't supposed to be cinematic brilliance at all. I think people know it's basically trash and don't expect anything more when they go. So those people who enjoy that kind of thing pay for it. For those who it's not their cup of tea, they steer clear. Simple as that.

The problem is that now they're lynching movies that aren't as well known now, like they were able to do with the first one - they had 10 years' worth of material to draw on.

It's interesting to see the folks behind some of the old fashioned parodies steering the whell now. Less T & A these days, though.

Correct, Scary Movie 3 and 4 were directed by David Zucker who made the fantastically irreverent Airplane and Naked Gun. Cinematic parodies a world away from the Scary Movie franchise because for all they stupidity they were electric and sharp, with so many gags a minute you a bound to get a least a couple of laughs and the visual humour of the films worked so much better.
