Bird Flu- Something to get worried about?

I just found out that my mum and dad are slowly stockpiling for what they believe is an unavoidable pandemic of the bird flu virus.

Over the disscusion at tea time, they said that it would have a massive effect on our lives and that it would mean there would be looting, and all the shops would shut down, and there would be no food and no ambulance men.

It isn't that serious is it?

Personaly,i can't belive that anything of this scale will happen, but still,my parents painted a pretty dire outlook and i'm curious as to what the wider public think-

Is bird flu going to have a major effect on daily life?

And then the four horsemen of the apocalypse will ride into town upon clones of Shergar.

Sorry, can't see it. A few people will get it. The Daily Mail will run panic banner headlines. The world will keep turning. It'll all go away.

By the way. If there is a pandemic, I won't be as prepared as you (as you can probably tell from my responce), so could I stay at your house until it blows over?

I'd get stockpiling now because everyone will be so busy stockpiling you won't be able to get any food!

I'm backing my immune system to take it on and beat it into oblivion, anyway.

To be honest, I ain't backing H5N1 to get anywhere near my bedroom. No one else manages it. Living in your own filth has its advantages.

you sound like the American guy who was so fat he couldn't get out of his bed, and his skin fused to the mattress, he had to be surgically removed and his house demolished around him..

Attention people!

The following are science fiction ....

a) The Stand (Stephen King)
b) Survivors (Terry Nation)
c) The Andromeda Strain (Michael Crichton)

In order for there to be a pandemic of bird flu, it will have to mutate into a form where it becomes transmittable from human to human. This can happen - usually starting in some third type of creature that can come into close contact with birds and humans that basically ends up with both bird flu and a human type virus at the same time (say 'regular' influenza).

This third creature becomes the host then, the source for the mutated hybrid virus, and hence becomes the springboard for the pandemic.

So, in summary, as long as the people from Kansas leave the pigs alone for a few months, we might get away with it (I appreciate that's a big ask though).
