The Steve Fossett Thread

This guy is an absolute hero of mine, a real throwback to the adventurers of yesteryear: the John Cobbs, David Livingstones, George Mallorys and Roald Amundsens of this world who did things just for the sheer fun of it. This year, he's attempting the world's longest flight - 26,000 miles.

Follow the progress here:

Global Flyer

Yeah but Chuck Norris could circumnavigate the globe after tea and be back in time to make love to his wife...

Crikey, thats a funny looking baloon..

I flew 300 miles in a cramped plane and got out feeling like death, I have quite a bit of admiration therefore for Fosset..

Just flying over the Canary Islands at the moment - the way the course changes are going, he'll be within 1 or 2 miles of Las Palmas in about a quarter of an hour.

Good fun plotting the track on Google Earth - I'm sad like that.

Certainly has.

He's just flown over a place in Saudi Arabia called 'al Madinah' at a speed of 357 knots and at a height of 47,000 feet (that's 410 mph and 9 miles up to you and me)

- ref N24.50866, E40.12866.

It's fun following it on Google Earth - that al Madinah place has a HUGE palace right in the middle of it.

Good luck to the guy.

Just reading about all the technical marvels of the plane, how sophisticated and aerodynamically perfect it is (needs parachutes to help it land!)

then i come accross this paragraph
The cockpit itself is a mere 7 feet long. It is equipped with a reclining carbon fiber seat. However, to get a good enough view for take off and landing, Steve will need to sit on cushions as the seat isn't high enough.

Glad to know the designers got it all spot on :P
(yeah yeah, i know theres probably a reason, but still, funny to think such perfection fails on such basic stuff )

Not sure. It took a couple of hours to cross the whole Saudi peninsula. Assuming current course and speed, he'll be approaching Karachi in about 3 hours
