Pensioner goes to jail for refusing to pay council tax!
Big story in the UK is how a pensioner has been sent to prison for not paying £70 of council tax after big increases in the last few months.. Wouldn't mind hearing peoples thoughts of it on here...
Personally, I think the old dear has got what she deserves.. I don't buy into the "stand" she has made.. After all, couldn't we just send her somewhere where they don't have rubbish collection, buses, a state run eductation, health service etc. and see how she likes it? Pretty irresponsible IMO, she obviously has some money because people on basic state pension don't have to pay council tax, so its just the case of the law doing its job, shame it can't put some proper criminals away, but thats another matter altogether.. |

Definitely, she's also costing the system even more money by forcing the government to chase her through the courts and jail her. I say bring back capital punishment for refusing to pay taxes on moral grounds!
![]() Seriously though people like this annoy the hell out of me. Why do they think they're special and how can they expect there to be an adaquate provision of public services without taxation? If on the other hand she refused to pay because her money was being used to kill Iraqi civilians she might have a decent case... Anyhow someone's paid it for her now and they let her out. |

If she was out of pocket and only on the state pension, she wouldnt have to pay in the first place.. Age shouldnt come into it..
This bint on the other hand is clearly enjoying her 15 minutes of fame though! |

If it were me refusing to pay and I was sentenced, would anybody even be told?

Yeah, no sympathy. Refusing to pay taxes when you've got the money to do so because you don't want to support services that everybody uses is hardly a wonderful moral stand.

I think the magistrate said something like "you may consider yourself a martyr, but you're a very foolish person".
Pretty much sums it up. Her entire argument seems to be: I'm old, so why should I pay? If she was in genuine need she'd qualify for Council Tax Benefit. Whatever happened to that nice Dr Shipman.....?
