    Watch this TV programme.....

    Rock School, C4, Friday 30th September, 9.30pm
In Gene Simmons' Rock School, the fire-breathing, blood-spitting bassist of Kiss tries to turn a classroom full of prim and proper British prep-schoolers into a hot and heavy rock and roll band. Gene is invited to Christ's Hospital, a 450 year-old boarding school outside London. There, the students wear uniforms, march in procession, and study classical music.

In just six weeks, Gene's monumental task is to transform a class of classically trained thirteen year-olds into guitar-strumming, head banging rock gods.

We follow their rollercoaster journey from the tears of joy and disappointment of the auditions, to the pressures of writing and recording a song, to the final exam - a debut gig opening for the heavy metal legends, Motorhead, in front of a crowd of 5000 fans.

The pupils must learn fast, because they are on trial with Gene every step of the way. Can they learn how to rock? Are they good enough to play in a band? And can they handle the pressures of playing in front of unforgiving metalheads?

The pressure is on Gene too. Will this hard partying rocker adjust to the early-to-bed tranquillity of the British countryside? Will he be able to win-over his straight-laced students, who disapprove of his hedonistic ways? Will he be able to convince the school principal that he actually knows what he's doing?

There are plenty of inspiring moments along the way in this heartfelt series, as Gene inspires his students to buck the establishment to pursue their musical dreams and their inner rock gods.
The programme starts a six-episode series next Friday at 9.30pm, and the reason you should watch it is because the school featured is the one I left three months ago. It was all filmed while I was there, and what they don't show in the programme is that everyone associated with the project, and everyone at the school who had any smidge of dignity, hated Gene Simmons. I met the bloke, and he's a clueless, pretentious idiot.

The "inspiring moments" consisted of him busting in on our chapel services and delivering pseudo-religious rubbish about rock music being a gift from God - this followed an admission that he did not believe in God!

And the band themselves were terrible, apparently - the Motorhead gig they did was a complete flop, they were an embarrassment. They tried their best, but couldn't be expected to succeed in what was pretty much an impossible task, with a fool like Gene for a teacher.

The bottom line when watching this series is to remember (for my sake, mostly) that although you'll come out of it thinking that the school itself is a really, really weird place (which it is), it is absolutely nothing like they have depicted it. Once the show airs I'll explain more - all I know is what I've heard from those who've seen it already (it's been aired in Australia and the USA already - a big hit apparently), and they gave us a really raw deal, supposedly.

Please watch - if nothing else, it'll give you plenty of ammunition to take the **** out of me with in the future.

They're about to show the final episode of the series this week down here, because we get American TV (for cheaper than they do). It has its moments.
Sreesanth said, "Next ball he was beaten and I said, 'is this the King Charles Lara? Who is this impostor, moving around nervously? I should have kept my mouth shut for the next ball - mind you, it was a length ball - Lara just pulled it over the church beyond the boundary! He is a true legend."

I saw one episode, and your observations are pretty much spot on. The band sucked (the lead singer in particular), I got the distinct impression that they all hated Gene Simmons, and the school seemed very strange indeed (who on earth designed the uniform??). It seemed like a concept that had a remote chance of working, but not with Gene Simmons in charge.

Who designed the uniform? That would be King Edward VI, I believe - he founded the place. It is 450 years old, bear in mind!

My observations are based only on what we could glean from the vibe around the place when filming was going on - haven't seen any of it yet, only a trailer this morning (my school - in the middle of "Friends"!?!).

Haha, fair enough, I'm sure the uniform wouldn't have attracted any raised eyebrows back then.

As opposed to now - when the school goes and marches through London every year, as they did yesterday (it's called the St Matthew's Day Parade, don't ask), there have been stories of Japanese tourists offering a thousand pounds for one of the coats. The downside being that the punishment for selling your uniform is expulsion!

(This place probably sounds weirder and weirder every word I say about it.....)

Yes, I've been watching this show on and off (I often forget it's on at 7.30), and it's reasonably amusing.

Say what you like about Gene (and it's fine for you to call him a douchebag of the highest order), but he is anything BUT clueless and pretentious. In fact, he's shrewd and completely unpretentious. He just has a mammoth ego.

Incidentally, my favorite part involved when he took the headmaster (or was she the assistant headmaster?) to L.A. to see his place, where she was (let's say, a tad self-flatteringly) convinced he was going to bed her, and was concerned about being "another notch on his bedpost". OMG, how will she recover from this when it's screened in the UK? Top stuff.

The band IS pretty awful though - although most of the kids are competent. It mainly comes down to a disastrous decision that Gene made to appoint that "elvish-speaking" ginger kid lead singer (I think because he felt sorry for him as he was a bit of an outcast). It's obviously depressed the rest of them a bit, because he continually drags down the standard, and they've now become protective of him and don't know how things can possibly be fixed. About the only place they can go with him is to play up a Johnny Lydon like schtick.

Barney, if you're worried about how your school is portrayed, there's not an awful lot of editorialising done in terms of ridicule or anything (what mainly gets Simmons' ire is the English weather) - but yes, the uniforms (and accents) do suggest extremely wealthy upper class kids. I can't speak for whether the school gets presented unfairly though.

The fact that it suggests extremely wealthy upper class kids is what ****es me off - that is absolutely not the demographic that the school attracts. They neglect to mention it was founded for the express purpose of giving kids from poor backgrounds a good education. 70% of pupils pay no fees at all, while the rest is based on a sliding scale of how much your family earns. It used to be the case (until they got short of cash) that if your family earned more than 50 grand a year you couldn't go there. For example, I am an average pupil - my parents are divorced, I live with my mother, and she earns around 14 grand a year as a receptionist. No-one in my family is remotely wealthy, yet the school gave me the opportunity to get a great education. Plenty of other kids are in my situation, too - one of my friends' fathers was in prison for his first two years there, only two or three of my 10 or so closest friends actually still live with both parents - and a massive number of pupils come from areas of London which could hardly be classed as posh.

As regards the accents, I bet you they didn't speak to any of the kids who can barely string a sentence together without saying "ya know", "innit", "man", "bruv" etc - London slang pervades conversation wherever you go. Fact is, the posh kids are the ones they chose for the show, because if they'd shown you the ones who are already in rock bands and play gigs all around the local area, that would have defeated the point a little.

I had no idea they'd taken our Deputy Head (or Assistant Headmaster) to LA - and when word gets out she thought Gene was going to try and shag her she'll never live it down at school. I'm going to be watching the show in my first few weeks at University - I dread to think what my new friends are going to think if people in Australia got the impression it's full of upper-class rich kids!

Maybe she thought she was going to get promoted to "Head Administrator"...

I quite enjoyed the series, Gene's Ego got a good workout. for mine the band actually turned out pretty well, especially the drummer - its just that the singer really sucked (and his jumping around the stage...)

someone says early on in the series that the demographic for the school isn't upper classes - that said 3/4 of people in England would sound upper class if they were out here

I guess any British accent probably sounds upper class to any non-British people, unless it's a Geordie (North-East), Scouse (North-West), Cockney (London), Brummie (Midlands) or Westcountry (South-West) accent - those are the strong ones which would sound very different to an Australian, American or whoever.
