    Hurricane Rita

This hurricane season is turning into a nightmare for the southern US folks...Katrina just devastated New Orleans and now we have hurricane Rita heading towards Galveston/Huston area... and whats worse is Rita is now a category 5 with 175mph sustained wind velocities and the third strongest hurricane on record. With over 48 hours left before it makes landfall ( expected) most experts are saying it has enough time to soak up more intensity from the high temperature gulf of mexico ( water temperatures are in high 80F range) and become the strongest hurricane on record.. I hope all the people get out safe and sound instead of the debacle of New Orleans...

It's supposed to make landfall on Saturday. Hopefully it'll have lost some of its ferocity then.

At first I thought they were just screaming because of Katrina, but this seems really serious...

I would rather take my chances in either Kashmir, Sierre Leone, Iraq then live there in hurricane country.

My wife lived in Galveston for quite a few years - she says it's very likely it'll get completely flattened again, 'cause the eye is likely to hit it smack bang.

Apparently, if it maintains it's current intensity, by the time it hits Texas, it'll be substantially worse than Katrina - and it could still hit Louisiana, where recovery efforts since the previous hurricane are still underway.

well not really, there is a significant chance it will hit New Orleans again, and from what they were saying it won't need a lot of rain to flood the city again.

"Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco urged coastal communities to evacuate as forecasts indicated Rita would come closer to state than previously thought."

Rita veered slightly north-east on Thursday, and New Orleans officials predicted up to 5in (8cm) of rain and a storm surge of up to 3ft (1m). "

It is probably just going to miss New Orleans this time, i think they will be far better prepared this time and i would be very very suprised if we saw any sort of repeat of the horror of Huricaine Katrina

They are fully prepared for this one, massive amounts of troops on standby. however New Orleans is being flooded again so things still not looking good.
