Niger crisis

Im sure everyone has been effected by all too familar pictures of famine in Africa and around the world , the latest being in Niger. The horrible images especialy of young starved children are especialy disturbing. The most shocking thing too me is that we knew nothing about this growing crisis. While everyone was watching the live 8 concerts that were doing an excellent job in keeping Africa in the public eye this horrible crisis was going on without any public knowledge. Surley in the 21st century more can be done too avoid tragedies like this.
I have no time for people that claim aid should not be given, while clearly Africas problems can not be solved by this but in situations like this it is imperitive that is is given.

I think more people should wake up and see whats really happening in the world.. people are too caught up in their own little world to care or do anything about the real tragedies that are happening... And the worst of it is we are letting it happen and it should be stopped...

I appreciate that viewpoint, but have you considered the fact that aid, although good short term, harms in the long term because it puts local firms out of business.. After all they are unable to cope with a cheap foreign influx of goods.. So a country that recieves aid just becomes dependant on aid because their is nothing else...

I think Niger has the second most corrupt government in Africa, which just about sums the sorry mess up..

I think thats a fair summary of it. Foreign aid alone is just like painting over rust. It's not solving the problem at all, just covering it up.

I apreciate that point that foreigh aid is clearly not the long term answer however in situations like this short term answers are really needed

foreign aid is never a long-term answer, but sometimes it is essential in the short-term....

So lemme get this straight, langeveldt.
If the crops fail in England next year due to some shyte and 20% of England cannot feed itself without looking for Aid, i suppose the english should just die of starvation ?

Africa is such a mess is because we(the west) keep it in such a mess. Simple as that.
We support corrupt governments, absolute butchers, send CIA teams around to thwart any modicum of political unity in the nation, fund revolutions and coups, all to just ensure that the supply line of resources are kept open from Africa.

Unfortunately, it's not the corrupt governments who find themselves having to slaughter their only cow because it's going to die in a day or two anyway and its milk has already dried up so, hey, it will allow the family to live for another week.

I think that as far as the everyday man in Niger is concerned, the fact that his government is the second most corrupt in Africa is probably the furthest thing from his thoughts at the moment - and THAT is what sums the sorry mess up.

If I can help, I will.
