why am i such a net player?

does anyone else seem to be mortaly afraid of batting in matches?

in my last 2 games i've got 2 ducks and lasted a total of 3 balls then had to sit out the rest of the innings watching people who i'm technicaly much better than hit big scores.

in nets,i have no problem, the balls that would get me out in a match are like easy pickings but in a match i freeze.

what should i do to bat better in matches?

    Don't worry.

Neil Pickup has made a career of it (if a student waster who only went to university to avoid work can be said to have a career).

My advice to you is exactly the same as it was to Neil - join the Rikki Clarke Appreciation Society and all will be well. Neil came along for 'Clarkewatch' on Saturday with a lifetime pb of 2. On Sunday, he was too slow to avoid selection so got lumbered into playing - and scored a (for him) what would normally be a career aggregate - 17.

Rikki Clarke - refreshes the prats other players cannot teach.

wtf. it should be theother way round. More scared in nets than the match. All you have to do is get over the first few balls with some rock solid defense and then blast away to get some confidence up. All it is, is confidence

When you're out in the middle, try and picture yourself back in the nets, and make sure you're always aware that there isn't as much pressure on you as you think. Pressure only exists for those who feel it.

Tell yourself to watch every ball right onto your bat, get your feet moving, and do what comes most naturally.

Most importantly, RELAX. That's the major reason why people fail in games - they tense up.

same happened to me the other day actually, whilst waiting to go in to bat at 5 i was hitting some decent shots in the nets, then i went in to bat, hung around for about 12 balls before getting a thin edge through to the keeper behind me, (although i did come in with about 3.1 overs left and just needed to push the run rate up as high as i could, wasnt helped by the fact that the other team put all their men around the bat and made it hard for me to get it off the square)

I have the same problem dude,

    listen,

Why do you care,It is game of cricket and you play it because you like so why do you take the pressure on your self?

The bowler who is bowling to you isnt under pressure he wants to get your wicket and dont let your self down with you giving your wicket away because you are under pressure,

    Play it like a game,
Bob is very insane stay away from him

Whenever I have a net, I always imagine I'm in a match situation, I always try and hit the ball along the ground, and picture where the ball is going in relation to possible fielders.. I often walk out of a net if I am out too often..

That way, when I get on the pitch, I just imagine I'm having a net, and it all seems to flow (well most times)

    Weak.

Anyway, like the general gist of what has been said already goes, not being able to convert technique in the nets into runs in the middle is primarily - in fact it could be argued entirely - a mental problem. You have to do what you can to remove the negative 'vibes'/thoughts/whatever from your head when you go out to an innings - "I can't make runs" will generally result in your not making runs.

A possible way of rebuilding your middle confidence would be just starting by restricting yourself to the defensive and one shot - your strongest, lowest risk shot (in my case the cover drive) - ideally not a particularly flamboyant one. Then as your mental hangups about not being able to score runs ever again disappear, you can unveil your full range of shots again.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
