Bhutan has long been one of my top two favourite countries, but for years I couldn't mention that fact without receiving blank stares from all my friends and colleagues. Until now. On the back of the successful Athens olympics campaign by Bhutan's two talented archers (they didn't medal, but at least they were there), the profile of this wonderful himalayan paradise has continued to expand considerably. First off came the release earlier this year of the brilliant Bhutanese film, Travellers and Magicians, which I haven't seen but I'm assuming is great because a newspaper article gave it four stars. Then came the movie Batman Begins. Batman, both the movie and the hero, begins in a Bhutanese prison, and the country and its beautiful landscapes feature throughout the first hour. Finally, last week, as I found myself tuning into the MTV show Trippin', with the divine Cameron Diaz and the hot Eva Mendes (who I saw naked in the otherwise suckful Training Day. Yesssssss!!!), I discovered to my great delight that on the current episode they were exploring where else but Bhutan. It was awesome and terrific both at once. I've spent the better part of today reading about Bhutan on the internet and fantasising about travelling there. Does anyone else get really excited about a foreign country?
