Bummer.
The man was indeed an institution. Two of my all-time favourite memories of Channel 4 were Countdown - I found it compulsive viewing in the early days (I only once met fellow Mensan Carol Vorderman) - and 'Ptang Yang Kipperbang' - still the best film I've EVER seen about cricket.

ja 'fraid so![]()
It's very sad, I was planning to actually go on Countdown in the future (I'd have been an octochamp at least). A lot of Scrabblers have been on Countdown (and won it) and have chatted with Whiteley and the others. I don't know what's going to happen to Countdown now, they were going to film some programs tomorrow with a guest presenter and series fifty-odd is being concluded on channel 4 over the next week/two weeks.

It'd be fitting to finish this series and then call it a day IMO.

Anyone want to join the Society?
Beware the evils of Kit-Kats - they're immoral apparently.
I always thought he was a sprightly old chap, certainly is a sad shock. I heard he was making a good recovery?![]()
I'll miss his really really really poor ties he used to wear. Farewell to him and his 186 jackets, R.I.P. One of the few proper characters of TV. What a loss.
Nobody else could present Countdown after Whiteley. Life without Countdown![]()

In memory of Fardin Qayyumi, a true legend of CW
I remember when Whitely appeared on Top Gear, and pulled off the most rubbish lap of all time.. TV will be poorer for the loss of RW
i remember JK did amazingly well and set a new record on there once
but yes indeed RIP.

He was endearingly rubbish, but seemed a genuinely good egg.
So he died from pneumonia, sorta fitting he went out with a 9 letter word!!![]()
No offence meant. RIP.

According to The Mirror Countdown will continue.
