Does anyone know much about how the Athlon CPUs compare to the Intel CPUs?
What's the better choice? Intel or Athlon?

Well I'd say Athlon is kinda better...but over here Athlon costs more then Intel so I just use Intel.

AMD can give Intel processors a good run for the money but performance wise, P4's are faster. I heard AMD has some heat problems as well. One thing to note though, a P4 is not that much better than a P3.
Intel for me

Only reason I ask is that my parents are looking at buying a laptop and they've got it down to between a
Intel Pentium 4 3.06
15" TFT Colour Screen
40 gig hard drive
Modem
256MB RAM
Combo DVD Reader/CD Writer
MS Windows XP Pro
or
AMD Athlon 2800
15" TFT Colour Screen
ATI Mobility 9600 Pro Video
60 gig hard drive
Modem
512MB RAM
DVD Writer
MS Windows XP Pro
Both are around the same price.
AMD performs much better and genarates better speeds for the procsessor but the only problem is that it tends to over-heat. so u have to use two fans to cool it down.
AMD is the better choice but...

Depends what you are using the machene for.. if money is not an issue and you dont play games then go Intel..
If you like playing game's AMD performs signifigantly better..
AMD chips tend to run alot hotter as well.. and are not as stable but they are much cheeper and out perform intel for gameing and graphics processing.
Personaly i much rather AMD..
yeh my dad is in the process of getting a new computer and he was told Athlons are mainly for gameplay...
dunno if thats true or not...
athlons are better for high end stuff, but in laptops where you dont have spac e for dozens of fan's intel is probably the better choice, particularly as i imagine your parents wont be playing too many games.
however the extra HD and RAM fo much the same prive i would probably but the athlon there.

Buy the Athlon... The Intel is pc there is faster but the athlon is fast enough... and the more harddrive space and more RAM would be an advantage.... Intel has some pretty good compact technology put there now.
Athlons usually are more stable but I'm not too sure about their mobile technoogy.
I would surely would go with the 2nd option then.Originally Posted by James
