Yasser Arafat passes away at 75

    Full story here

The impression I got from the article is that he did squat all.

This will be interesting in the future of Israel and in the Gaza and West Bank.

RIP Fardin Qayyumi, a true legend of CW

One man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter... He should be given credit for at least trying to go down the route of diplomacy. I think the killer blow to the peace process was that d*ckless piece of sh*t who shot Rabin.

I've a feeling it's going to leave a bit of a power vacuum in the Palestinian authority areas.

I just hope it doesn't kick off too badly.

When Arafat was first made the leader of the PLO, he was certainly a figurehead for Palestinian/Jordanian independence from Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. Unfortunately, for the last decade of his life, he'll be remembered as the lame duck leader he was. He just could never bring himself to concede to the Israelis or Americans, particularly in 2000 at Camp David. He never wanted to be remembered as the guy who finally gave in to the Israelis and to me, this lack of compromise, made him superfluous in world politics for a long time. I guess he figured that had he conceded, 50 years of fighting would have been for naught. Too proud a man to be concilliatory maybe?

Whatever. With Arafat gone, it'll be open season on Palestinian leaders in Gaza. It'll probably be calm for a little while but as soon as a suicide bomber takes out a cafe or something, the retribution will be huge. Massive, in my opinion. Many innocents killed.

Sure thing... He had such a graceful runup, brilliant quick bowler and role model... Should never have carried on until the 2003 world cup though...

Hmm, was that an intentional double negative on your part there Chris? I'm inclined to think not.
