I went onto BBC hoping there was some new news story to keep track of, but Mohammad Morsi's death wasn't what I was expecting.

A facebook friend of mine went typed out a status rant about how Morsi was the only democratically elected Arab leader in history, and I was wondering why on earth is he suddenly throwing a fit about Morsi out of the blue. So this is the reason? Murder perhaps?

Dying during a trial is suspicious timing. If it is murder, I'm not sure we'll find out within the next few years given who may be involved.

Basically trying to transition from a authoritarian military run state to a full democracy. About a year ago a new leader was brought into power to allow this transition to happen, following about 2-3 years of unrest and protest, with a quite violent backlash. Unfortunately it has huge ethnic divides and it will probably, like always, take time. This is probably another attempt by the old regime to try regain some power we will see.

nIndeed it seems to be a backlash against a reformist PM, as details in this article indicate that there has been a bit of friction between the new PM's office and the military

Love how they call the action a 'statutory instrument' and not the law it effectively is.

The Kenyan Government figure that they can shut down the 2 billion USD mobile phone betting industry. Looks like Everton and Hull might be on the market for a new shirt sponsor if the government 48 hour notice to all gamblers to withdraw their deposits actually kicks in

SportPesa and Betin have argued that it would be impossible for mobile companies to shut down their paybills and short codes since they have pending cases in court between them and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on taxes.

Last week, High Court Judge Weldon Korir suspended BCLB’s decision to deny Betin a chance to renew its licence.

Betin argued before court that unless an urgent temporary order is issued to stop the board’s decision, it would suffer irreparable losses, including being arrested for running an unlicensed business.

Here are the lastest big developing stories coming out Africa this week.

Kenya's Finance Minister and charged with corruption, out on bail

The court released Mr Rotich and Mr Thugge on Ksh50 million ($500, 000) bond with surety or cash bail of Ksh15 million each.

The two officials are among more than 10 others who were charged Tuesday with multiple counts including abuse of office, conspiracy to commit an economic crime, conferring a benefit and single sourcing for the insurance of the projects, and approving payment contrary to the law
Crazy political scandal unfolding in Botswana over an apparent assasination plot

The mishap came less than a month after the president aborted a trip to Maputo, Mozambique mid-air on suspicion that a group of Botswana nationals in South Africa had hired assassin to kill Masisi, who has fallen out badly with his predecessor and benefactor, Lt-Gen (rtd) Ian Khama.
and finally South's Sudan's President feels people shoudn't play his country's national anthem if he is not around to hear it

Information Minister Michael Makuei told AFP that different leaders and institutions were playing the anthem at whim, which was an abuse of the national tune, written shortly before independence in 2011.

"For the information of everybody the national anthem is only meant for the president, in a function only attended by the president, not for everybody," Makuei said.

Here's your first WTH moment of the month

Kenyan authorities are investigating an incident where a container delivering a donation to its Parliament from the Chinese government arrived empty in Nairobi on Tuesday. The donation of “friendship”, which contained computers and projectors as well as other assorted items, had been part of a pledge by Cao Jianming, the Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) of China.

Thank God Ugandan legislation doesn't operate in Cricketweb

The singer, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, appeared in court on a prior treason charge after he and other opposition politicians allegedly stoned Mr Museveni's convoy during a campaign rally in August 2018.

"He was charged with annoying the President" in relation to the same case, his lawyer Asuman Basalirwa told AFP.

Appreciate these updates mate. Thanks for them.

Re the South Sudan anthem, do we all agree that if any country has an “information minister” then it’s completely ****ed up?
