If it helps you... great. No point worrying about a past you can't change and everyone is different, reaching their perspectives as it becomes open to them. You lead your own life and not any body else's. Don't feel guilty for learning something late. Some people never learn at all.

See this as an equivalent to define a research problem statement, which means everything in life is open ended in nature, you can experiment with various things to have a better understanding of reality. Avoid absolutism of any kind.

They say religion is the opium of the people, to which my response used to be "so what?"

These days my right knee plays up most of the time, and going to church is cheaper than heroin ............

A few years ago I really began to develop some problems with two things in religion:

    - The business like nature of the church and its appeals to people to give money for nothing (churches who basically do no charity/good and essentially run as a club for members, and pay pastors for entertainment)

    - The selling of substitutionary atonement thru fear of hell

I used to vehemently detest it, as my folks are the sort of atheists who take pride in it and like to declare it.

Now I know for sure that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven.

Watching Cleophus James at the royal wedding on the weekend changed everything for me.

I get where you're coming from Brockers, but I don't know that phrasing revelations of sexual abuse as an attack on Christians is anything other than leading with your chin here.

I think he means he sees the actions of these Priests as an attack on the Faith

IE - the ideology is good, and there are aspects of the religion that are good, but there are people (outside and within) who are attacking it either by focusing on the bad, or doing bad in the name of the religion.

It's a battle within the ideology and the religious community itself, as much as it is a battle between them and those outside who seek to diminish it.

Replace priests with jihadis and rape with blowing **** up

Does it really need to be re-iterated that the actions of a few don't define an entire faith or movement?
