Remember when Labours biggest problem in opposition was how many uncharismatic blokes they had named David?

I still think Shearer was great. Cunliffe, however, was a ****.

Shearer is great but he did lack a bit of an aura.

Shearer was a fairly classic case of someone who was probably more qualified than anyone to be on the international stage, smart, diplomatic, etc. But he lacked that "have a drink with" x factor and seemed like a bit of a wet fish in that regard. A sad indictment of politics.

Surely if Ross really wasn't the leak he would sign a privacy waiver asking for the police to confirm this.

And that's a second term locked up for Labour. Wherever this goes it's done huge damage to Bridges in particular and the National party in general.

That is incorrect, a person has to break a law that carries at least 1 years jail (or accumulation). Non citizens of Australia are all covered by the same laws, you cant make exceptions to the law simply because someone is from NZ. People have to be responsible for their own actions.

That's not all of it, though. You're right that anyone who's sentenced to a year's jail or more does get their visa immediately cancelled, but it also stretches beyond that with the discretionary "character" test.

So NZ laws are no different to Australia's.

It's kinda less likely to happen to people who have lived here all their lives and have never known anything else.

Not really. An Australian couple working in NZ and having a child in NZ: the child is automatically an NZ citizen because the parents are automatic NZ residents on arrival. It cannot be deported years later to a country it has never been to.

Whereas because of the Special Class Visa that NZers get when they are living in Aus, they do not have PR. And (as has happened) children who were born in Aus and grew up in Aus and who have never even been to NZ have been deported to NZ.

Australians in New Zealand are granted permanent residency on arrival, can access welfare after two years, access student loans after three years and, after five years, $480 to become citizens.

New Zealanders are not granted permantent residency, instead are under a Special Category Visa that allows a person to live in Australia indefinitely, but you can never access social security, student loans or disaster relief, despite working and paying tax in the country. They have to apply for permanent residency ($$$) to access any of these things. In addition there were some more lopsided rules that were only fixed this year.
