    This is gun:

He belittles the architectural work he did for Hitler, mocking the designs as “pretentious,” but what remains astonishingly true is that he believed in Hitler’s architectural jingoism. Hitler tells Speer that Berlin, compared with Paris and Vienna, is “nothing but an unregulated accumulation of buildings,” and here Speer’s nationalist insecurity aligns with his architectural ambition. He, too, wanted to assuage Germany’s wounded pride, to wipe off the humiliation of losing the First World War by erecting edifices. He toiled to make a reality of Hitler’s imperial megalomania—buildings that would last a thousand years, structures that reflected a Germany to which the rest of the world would bow—so much so that his disapproving architect father, on seeing his models, told him, “You’ve all gone completely crazy.”

Nah the biggest mind**** is reading the diaries of Wermacht soldiers who were posted to the Eastern Front. You get incredibly tedious domestic stuff where they're writing to their wives about life on the front casually interspersed with vivid descriptions of the most awful atrocities.

This is what every war is like from all accounts. Long stretches of boredom interspersed with brief bursts of complete mayhem and terror.

EDIT: Minus the atrocities, ofc. Although these aren't that unusual either.

To paraphrase Morrissey, it depends on whether one considers that evil is something you are or just something you do.

I guess one can construct a slightly jesuitical argument that good people can perform evil actions or hold evil ideas & vice versa, but for the purposes of brevity: yes, yes they are.

It was just the way seemingly ordinary men could write about committing the most evil acts in such a banal way.

It's what made studying the Holocaust so difficult intellectually for me, because I couldn't wrap my head around the thought process behind it.

You read Mein Kampf and it's just clearly the deluded rantings of a madman. Yet said madman was able to commandeer the apparatus of the state and thousands of German citizens to extinguish millions of lives as if they were just a candle flame.

It's easy to write off Nazism as a bunch of cartoonish supervillains sitting cackling away in their lairs. Photographs of the ear focus on the big hitters - Hitler, Göbbels, Göring, Himmler, Heydrich, Hess etc. But the actions of those men wasn't the real evil of National Socialism. The real evil was the millions of ordinary Germans who were accomplices to the Final Solution, or those who were complicit by doing nothing to stop it.

That is why their ideas must be opposed and why it is not acceptable to simply hide behind the First Amendment.

Speer wasn't just an architect. He was in charge of war production. And routinely complained that Hitler never let him put the German economy on a total war footing. He built a production empire that was based on slave labour.
