Labour trying to hold together a Labour-Greens -NZF coalition with a majority of just 1 (yes it could be higher with special votes) may be a poisoned chalice. Probably best if National form the government wtih NZF at this point tbh.

I think Greens should cross the fence. I think that's our best scenario coming from this, and forcing Winston out. The problem is that might make Labour become even more pandering to the racists and regressives from NZF.

    **** it let's do a Labour-National coalition.

It's a big risk crossing the fence and going with a non-traditional coalition partner, and the backlash from your voter base can be savage in future elections (see Liberal Democrats, Maori Party).

One thought I had was whether National's strong showing might actually hurt their chances with Winston in a weird way. Winston will remember what happened in 1998, and will know that if National only need 2 or 3 of his MP's to jump ship in a crisis, that potentially puts him in a tenuous position.

Headline overstates it but National-Green coalition seems very unlikely. Some level of trust would be required to be in a coalition and I doubt there's much of that on either side.
Green Party leader James Shaw rules out contacting National

Shaw said he would not being making contact with National, but he would take a call from National leader Bill English.

"It's my responsibility to do so. And we'll have to see what they've got to say. But one of the things I will be saying in return is 'You know we campaigned on a change of government and you know what was in our manifesto ... and how incongruous that is to what the National Party policy programme is'."

The Greens party would self destruct if it ever formed a coalition with National. It'd destroy their base entirely, goodbye 2020.

Even if they were willing to take the risk of alienating their base in order to get something done in the next three years, they might be quite sceptical of how much they could achieve - they wouldn't trust National and would know there would be people within the National government who would actively work against anything they'd try to achieve.

    perfect

though i don't think they'd be destroyed, the people who are there for the hard left stuff only uni student politicians care about would simply start their own irrelevant little party. in an ideal world they'd have a three way riot with the young nats and act on campus and all three go to jail.

    Winston on top form today:

Re David Seymour: "the most expensive beneficiary in the country".

As much as I hate that man, you've gotta love him.

Special vote results pretty much as expected:

    National -2
    Labour +1
    Greens +1

The Greens bringing in NZ's first ever refugee MP is a pretty cool story.

What's her back story? Iran is pretty messed up (admittedly no more messed up than most cricketing nations), but one of the most fascinating countries on earth. Were her parents supporters of the Shah, protestors against the ayatollah, Sunni, Shia, Zoroastrian, Bahai, Kurds, Christian, communists, academics, anti-Iraq war, supporters of D-grade comedians (like their daughter) or other?
