    The European Politics Thread

With Italian and Austrian elections coming-up soon, as well as the French and German elections next year I thought that European politics probably deserves its own thread.

In France right now Fillon and Juppe prepare to face-off in the Republican primaries after eliminating Sarkozy.

The European left have been absolutely buried. This is a result of unsustainable and uncontrolled immigration for too many years.

Those who were bored of the "lesser of 2 evils" type debating when discussing Trump and Clinton, because if its between Le Pen and Fillon who is pretty hard right, then you ain't heard nothing yet

I think Le Pen will be cheering Fillon today, she polls better against him and you worry if Fillon with his hardline stance on so many issues such as immigration, jobs, pensions etc will alienate the left which to be fair Juppe who is more moderate won't.

This was somewhat of a surprise - especially the 67-33 drubbing.

France presidential race: Fillon wins conservative candidacy

Francois Fillon is to be the conservative candidate in next year's French presidential election after his rival Alain Juppe admitted defeat.

With virtually all the results counted, Mr Fillon had won Sunday's run-off with nearly 67% of the vote.

Mr Fillon said action was now needed to build a fairer society.
He is likely to face a Socialist candidate and the far-right's Marine Le Pen in next April's election......

General elections are planned to be held in the Netherlands on 15 March 2017 to elect all 150 members of the House of Representatives.

2017 could change Europe forever with Austria, France and The Netherlands on a populist knife-edge.

Dutch far-right Party for Freedom tops polls as Europe’s ‘populists’ gain momentum

The far-right Dutch anti-immigration Party for Freedom, led by Geert Wilders, would become the largest party in the parliament and beat the prime minister’s ruling conservative liberals if elections were held today, according to a new poll data.

The Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) would win 33 seats in the 150-seat lower chamber of the Dutch parliament if elections were held today, according to Maurice de Hond, the Netherlands’ most reputed pollster.*

In that case, Wilders would become the Netherlands’ next prime minister as chairman of the biggest parliamentary party, according to the PJ Medianews outlet. Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s People's Party for Freedom and Democracy would finish second, securing 25 seats.

The word 'populist' must be among the most abused words in recent times.

Means very little to me as it gets applied rather broadly. Nationalist or Nativist or Socialist would be more specific depending on what you are describing.

Hoefer loses in Austria, poor guy was the betting favourite on the night of the election, kiss of death. All eyes on Italy now, no camp favourite.

More I think, discuss andd read about this election, I have to admit, I am probably wrong on MLP been happy about running against Fillon. The beatdown of Juppe was savage, and while his economic policies may alienate some of the left, he will still eat into Le Pen's base with his hard line stance on immigration, multiculturalism, social issues.

That and 'freedom' when used to describe far right parties.

Why are people getting crazy about Italy being a basket-case politically again?

it's not pro or anti EU, it's not pro or anti "populism", it's just ****ing Italy being Italy.

41 PM's since 1946. Everyone wants to make everything into a narrative, this isn't one, just crazy. Is Berlusconi in prison yet or could he be back?
