Curiously, we have never cared too much about our respective beliefs because it makes no difference as too how we feel about eachother. Its a case of friendship trumps worldview.

However, and here's the rub - "Abu" is quite happy to admit that he is a "Christmas and Easter" Muslim who still prays to Allah but is not quite sure whether the whole thing is true or not. This mindset makes "Abu" tolerant of my views, and I very much respect his. What we both have no time for is the brand of absolutist Islam which seems alll too typical accross the globe, and currently toxic to any given society.

Probably not. But do you know, I'm not really fussed one way or the other.

True belief to the Sunnah of Allah and the Prophet and not just anything that supports your worldview.

Just a little more study of the Quran and the the context to which the verses were revealed completely changes everything, as opposed to literally taking the verses and applying it to all situations. The Quran was revealed over around 20 years not overnight. Each of it's verses has a significance and reason for revelation and applies to a strict context and not for every situation.

So the verses that people use to justify their violence were revealed during times of war when the Quraish attacked the Muslims after driving them out of their homes.

So what you're saying is that those verses make perfect sense now in times of war?

Those verse can be applied if the same situation occurs. For example, Afghans have the right to fight their occupiers.

To the Muslims at the time they were fighting the Quraish...who were unbelievers. They did not fight them because they did not believe in Islam but rather because of the persecution they inflicted.

Isn't that supposedly why the ISIS do what they do? Ergo, they're true beliebers.

I wrote, '.....prays to Allah but is not quite sure whether the whole thing is true or not.'

That mindset is not the same as disbelief, but rather an act of true faith.
