Not the most neutral of sources but hard to call this anything but an actual attack on free speech. Saudi seems to be feeling emboldened by its current close political ties with the US and Trump's political validation.

The tweet from Canada's foreign affairs:

"Canada is gravely concerned about additional arrests of civil society and women’s rights activists in #SaudiArabia, including Samar Badawi. We urge the Saudi authorities to immediately release them and all other peaceful #humanrights activists."

Samar Badawi is the sister of Raif Badawi. This guy:
Raif Badawi (Arabic: رائف بدوي‎, also transcribed Raef Badawi;[1] born 13 January 1984)[2] is a Saudi writer, dissident and activist, as well as the creator of the website Free Saudi Liberals.

Badawi was arrested in 2012 on a charge of "insulting Islam through electronic channels" and brought to court on several charges, including apostasy. In 2013 he was convicted on several charges and sentenced to seven years in prison and 600 lashes. In 2014 his sentence was increased to 10 years in prison, 1000 lashes, and a fine. The flogging was to be carried out over 20 weeks. The first 50 lashes were administered on 9 January 2015.

Following the 2012 arrest, Amnesty International designated Badawi a prisoner of conscience, "detained solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression", and said: "Even in Saudi Arabia where state repression is rife, it is beyond the pale to seek the death penalty for an activist whose only 'crime' was to enable social debate online".[13] Calling for the government to drop the charges, Human Rights Watch stated: "The charges against him, based solely to Badawi's involvement in setting up a website for peaceful discussion about religion and religious figures, violate his right to freedom of expression".[2]

If Trump has any principles whatsoever he'll stand by Canada on this one. I doubt he will.

is there a more detestable 'country' than saudi arabia?

if the world really believed in the liberation by force narrative then saudi would be target #1

Swaziland would be number 2. But Saudi is clearly more urgent

Erdogan's latest crusade seems to be to attempt to prove that you don't have to be Chavismo to absolutely crater your economy. Seems to have flown under the radar a bit just how disastrous his economic policies are becoming.
do you think people will be allowed to make violins?
who's going to make the violins?

What policies in particular? I was under the impression that Turkey's economy was booming, it's just the sanctions which have dampened that.

Hard not to see parallels between this and the Saudi-Canada conflict.

    Everyone is a hypocrite.

The policy of appointing Erdogan's son-in-law to run in the economy who then, without any shred of competence, mess around with central bank settings despite 15% inflation is one.

    Bashar's law no 10.

The guy is a master in nepotism, cronyism, and political leverage. At this stage it's that the US has he will nor the leverage to be able to dissuade him from the massive lining of his supporter's pockets that's going to happen.

I remember being a high school-er dancing to Bobi Wine's Reggae Afrobeat fusion music. It boggles my mind how on earth this is the sort of guy who would end up facing treason charges for his political view points. This is how daft things have gotten in Uganda with pretty much every 'serious' check or balance expected to stand up to Yoweri Museveni and his army thugs beaten into submission
