Yeah exactly the sort of weird hobby horse authoritarianism you tend to get from outsider candidates, unfortunately.

He was pretty vague about it though to the point where I don't think he's really thought about it properly. ThErE sHoUlD bE a LaW even if he hasn't figured out what it should be yet.

There are people from very different parts of the political spectrum with a hate boner for porn - feminists who oppose it for catering to female objectification, certain leftists who see the porn industry as capitalism at it’s most exploitative (further angered by things like the GirlsDoPorn consent issues), alties who see porn as a degenerate Jewish evil forced upon society to break it from within, hard religious people who see it as spiritually immmoral etc.

Whether politicians approach this from the pov of the porn industry itself (exploitation), porn addiction (degeneracy/religion) or the objectification of woman in porn (feminism) etc. depends on which demographic they want to attract imo.

I’m not surprised Yang is going for the addiction angle.

Yang would be better off enforcing better storyline and acting in pornos.

Correct me if I’m wrong - All he said was that he wants to (technologically, I assume) empower families more to restrict kids’ access to porn. He hasn’t said he’s anti-porn or anything.

Which part do you disagree with and why?

But parents can already do this, the issues with pornography aren't about access. I think it's funny because his voting base aren't mums with kids, they're young people who are terminally online and love looking at porn.

Him wanting better software tools for parents to filter porn has nothing to do with governance though.

The implication of his tweet is that there should be govt regulation through which porn should be harder to access or that there should be more liability/burden on porn companies in confirming their audience are adults.

When a potential (lol) HoS says he wants to ‘empower’ an authority figure to restrict access to a certain media, it’s almost 100% a thinly vieled censorship dogwhistle. If it’s not and it’s simply him tweeting in his capacity as a layman parent wishing for better parental firewalls, it’s daft of him to assume anyone will actually interpret it that way.

Please elaborate. How do parents currently ensure that their 12 year-old boy doesn't have access to porn.

Yes, he doesn't care more about his core vote-bases than about people who are not part of it. That's one thing to like about him.

Not really. Government can incentivise research of particular technology in various ways.

I hope that's not it. I'll be very disappointed if that's his intention.

If I'm a parent worried about porn, I'll put the family computer in a shared area and limit screen time. If I'm really concerned I'll install NetNanny.

Of course now you're going to say that I can't stop him/her using a smartphone to do it. My kid's probably going to be smarter than me at using a computer as well, so they'll find a way anyway. And it's true. There's literally no way to stop access without following my child everywhere or tracking everything. So now my question to the Yang Gang member is how is he going to solve this problem without doing something like the Great Chinese Firewall? Remember he wants to do it technologically.

Ignoring your base is literally one of the reasons Hillary lost.

It has to be something new. We don't know what it'd be, and I think he doesn't either. At this initial stage he has just expressed his wish for a better solution.

Fair enough. But I hope that doesn't push Yang to give preferential treatment to one set of voters over another. I'd rather prefer him to lose.

He'll definitely lose in that case. He's running for president of ~350 million people with exceptionally diverse and varied interests. He's going to have to pick and choose, like anyone.
